I'm glad actually, DX until this release has been the only way you can play the original outside of owning the cartridge. The original has some really fun glitches to play around with.

I love the gameplay in 6 a lot but I feel 4 may have the superior story of the two, and it's one of the reasons I really need a top ten list over a fiver, because I really want both.
CT is great because it has good music, good plot, good characters to root for, and the best translated dialogue, visuals and presentation of the three.

Completely agree.

Also, some players are just better at reacting to whatever item is thrown at them. Being able to deal with that added level of craziness is a skill in Smash. Playing the game with no items has always felt lame.

CT's plot is excellent because once it starts moving you are just propelled from one cool chapter to another. the only time it slows down a bit is with Frog in the middle ages, but by then you're totally sucked into the weird mystery of Lavos and Magus

I feel that if you’re not doing 1v1 then items do equalize it some. 1v1 will almost always boil down to skill.

Again a very likpatous story
The remakes of Diamond and Pearl are great because someone got a copy early and started posting gameplay and they brought back single use TMs but have the gym leaders give you 99 of them like a romhack trying to implement reusable TMs in an old game.

The coolest thing about the Series X is it probably has this game on the storefront already and probably can emulate it to make it look better too

I let my Nintendo Online lapse because I wasn't playing anything on the switch online and will continue not to. I also was in the mood to play a SNES game and was like, oh right, these are part of that service lol

I say this as someone with 100+ hours in Sword and Shield so you know I'm a Pokemon apologist but the DP remakes look like the laziest, most cash grab Pokemon rpgs in a while

I don’t really understand what you mean by floaty physics unless you just mean the way she kinda hangs in the air for a second when using the grapple beam

Speaking of Metroid did I really unlock the shinespark with the speed boost in Dread? I didn’t even think to try it yet just assumed it needs to be unlocked (I pressed down once and it didn’t work but must have done the input wrong)

Samus slows down when jumping unless you have the speed upgrade, or deliberately take damage while turning around to exploit its knockback effect.
She can also change direction in mid air really easily (provided she's somersaulting), and her fall rate isn't terribly high without certain manipulations.

The best example is to just have her jump straight up. I don't have my Switch on, but as I recall Samus jumps up faster than she falls back down.

My main problem is that I'm coming into the Metroidvania genre from games like Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow, and Super Metroid just feels so stiff compared to those two. It's not a game I played in my childhood, so I don't have any nostalgia for it coloring my perceptions or muscle memory for its particular challenges.

It's still a good game, don't get me wrong, but if I was compiling a top 5 list of SNES games, Super Metroid would not be on it.

Mister Facetious posted:

The SNES really needs a top 10 to fit more of the good poo poo that I want.
In short, this is absolutely correct. Maybe more of a Top 15 or 20.

That's strange. When I went into Super Metroid, the controls hardly phased me. I got used to its world and then just had a blast. It's a very well designed Metroidvania and it encourages you to explore and test things. Plus the physics work in its favor but you do have to accept them.

Like I said, the game is still good, I was able to finish the game when I played it for (basically) the first time last month. It's just a little nitpick I have about the controls.

Also, it's weird that when you press Start, the game does not pause immediately. Enemies are still moving up until the point that the map screen appears. You can still get hit and even die in that time, and you can't do anything about it because you have no control after you pause.
