Blood Boils posted:John wick and Dredd use CGI blood and it's super noticable but I don't even care about fully cg characters so I'm probably a bad judge of this it looks bad there too but it helps that they don't hold on it. with harder they fall, they'd just hold on a smear on the wall that was clearly cgi. wick gets away with the poo poo it does because of the choreography

Care and love are what make an action movie good; these things tend to correlate with effort. I can overlook the digital blood splatters and muzzle flares in John Wick, the same way I can overlook the bulky under-jacket squibs and the obvious smoke and sparks punching through the blood packets in Hard Boiled - when you're being entertained by people doing something genuine and special you get caught up in it. But when you're watching Expendables 2 or whatever and a bunch of hunks are waving airsoft guns at collapsing stuntmen in an airport hanger you get bored and detached, and the bad effects start standing out more. "That CG blood is terrible" is just a modern take on "I can see the zipper on the rubber suit" - you've lost the audience and now they're nitpicking.

Finally finished twin peaks s2, thought the finale was pretty weak- less so than the rest of the second half but still not great- and I'd have been pretty mad if I stuck it through all that without the knowledge that it will be continued

I actually liked the first expendibles as campy dumb action fun. I also appreciated their revisiting of the ridiculous 80s storyline mainstay of "we must gruesomely slaughter every single person in The 2nd (and especially the 3rd one, christ) was unambiguously bad

Jane Campion has a new movie coming out starring Benedict Cumberbatch and I read something about his "method" involving not showering for days at a time and smoking actual hand-rolled cigarettes for every take where he was supposed to be smoking, to the point it made him sick several times lol. currently at a Tim Minchin show and ffffffuck this is aged, aged, old comedy. I got the tickets for free and was never a giant fan but I remember seeing some of his stuff on tv when I was 14 and just drat if all the danger and edginess is long gone. it’s not miserable or anything but I really feel like the “boomer humour” equivalent for millennials is a comedian filling 5 minutes of his hour 5 set by playing a song that contains 20 seconds of jokes or comedy in it. and this is his entire Schlick!!!!!!!! either that or complaining about loads of poo poo, acknowledging you’re guilty of it, and saying “but I’m a hypocrite” to huge applause. feel like I’ve heard that exact joke maybe 500 times in my life
