Can’t wait for when people are spending $1 million just for a nft jpg of jungkook. They also announced plans for a new US based girl group, no word on Sakura’s group though which I hope just means that they will debut soon.

Former popular produce48 contestant Miyu Takeuchi was signed to Mystic Story, released two songs as a soloist there, chose (according to her) to quit Mystic Story to focus on youtube and recently quit youtube to focus on learning about and selling NFT's. AKB48 -> PD48 -> good agency -> youtube focus -> NFT's is like the worst career downgrade I could imagine. Anyway content https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8272gVSwQGY

Given how popular gatcha games are in Japan, NFTs might be the most lucrative (and stupid) racket possible there lol, especially for the AKB48 fan base which is next level insanity compared to even Kpop.

The NFT grift is a pyramid scheme based around convincing suckers that they're going to be able to resell poo poo to the *real* suckers. The way anyone really makes money on it is suckering a bunch of people into investing, then taking the money and disappearing, which is harder when you're an actual company. I could see it evolving in areas with rabid fanbases as limited collectables, but I really hope not considering each one uses more electricity than I use in a year to generate. I think standard collectables/exclusives are a ton cheaper for companies to produce and already tap that market. Its definitely an insane career decision for someone to take. Speaking of mystic story, they're debuting a new group 'Billlie' in a week or so. Wondering if jyp is going to aim to release their group this year or wait until the start of next year to aim for more potential 'new artist' award stuff.

Twice's output this year really is something else in terms of both quantity and quality. Another album full of absolute bangers. For some reason the initial bass hits of the title track made my brain immediately start going, "nauuughty, nauuughty, nauuughty, oh-way-oh-oh."

ZypherIM posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9jhxOwcaw0 It's a weird song but I like it. It feels like it needs a couple breaks just to set the choruses apart from the nonstop continuous flow of the song, but on the other hand, the nonstop hyperpop unconventional feel is also a large part of why I find it interesting? I guess it's a bit of a clash between having your expectations pleasantly met or subverted, and I think this hews more towards the latter, I'm just not sure that absolutely every subversion works. Still, it's cool as hell to see how bold and adventurous 4th gen rookie ggs are being with their sound.

Yeah I'm not sure if I like it but I don't *dislike* it, and as you say the willingness to step that far out of current trends is impressive. I hope it works well enough for people so they don't feel the need to pivot to something safe, because I've got a feeling that they're likely to hit on something that I do find really awesome at some point.

Ring x Ring is definitely a Lee Minsu song. I love it. Going to listen to the rest of the album later. e: Lee Minsu doing whatever he feels like is what gives us poo poo like Sixth Sense. I hope he and Kim Eana continue to work with the group and give us gold like that again. esperterra fucked around with this message at 00:17 on Nov 11, 2021 |

They're under JYP and their music mostly follows the kpop formula (gotta have that rap and boatloads of random English), buuuuuut they're all Japanese and primarily promote in Japan. WHATEVER. I’d say Kpop since people in Japan would probably view it as a Kpop group as well . But regardless I really like the song.

It's driving me crazy that I can't think of what the melody of Chopstick's chorus is from. It's like a classic cartoon song or circus music or something ahggggg EDIT: its from the same piano exercise as the opening part and it's called Chopsticks Bottom Liner fucked around with this message at 04:35 on Nov 11, 2021 |

I'd consider them kpop, they're a survival show group formed by, trained by, and signed by JYP. They're all japanese members and focused at the japanese market, but their stuff is closer to kpop than most groups' japanese releases. Also I don't think random english is a kpop thing really, lots of non-english speaking places use a lot of english words for a variety of reasons. In the reverse, I run into plenty of english speakers than will have some random spanish phrases/words they might use (or say french/german/etc). On top of that sort of thing you have a ton of words for stuff that is too new to have had words develop in other languages so they use an english loanword. Mash it all up with online communities spreading across languages more and you get a lot of english words used for flavor/effect just casually and that leads to them being in songs more. edit: anyways, some releases ichillin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-kl89T3Tnw Sort of the same vibe I get from Itzy? Not sure a good descriptor of it, but thats the energy I get. sohlhee: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcnAUMhtGE0 I'm not familiar with this artist, but I loving love this bass line. Really not any sort of sound I would expect out of SM, its always good to see a larger company trying to keep things that made them want to acquire a smaller one around. I think I phrased that weirdly, but it doesn't feel like they tried to change whatever sound/style stuff to fit into 'SM' style sounds. songsun (tri.be) with a ben cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diJr4wI9zFo ZypherIM fucked around with this message at 06:33 on Nov 11, 2021 |

Yeah, I'm not talking so much about loanwords and phrases, which are honestly pretty common across all languages. Rather the tendency of Kpop songs to switch between Korean and English seemingly at random, often within the same... sentence? It's kinda hard to describe the linguistic unit here, since we're talking about song lyrics rather than prose, and those tend to be pretty... loose with hewing to grammatical standards. Regardless, the individual language phrases seem to make grammatical sense, and strung together, make sense in context (which is a heck of a thing considering the different phrasal organization of Japanese/Korean vs English). Actually, now that I think back to the Jpop and Jrock I've listened to over the last 2+ decades, that tendency to switch languages is also there, although I think it's less common to do so in the middle of a line. Not that I have some statistical lyrical analysis to back that up, it's strictly from my anecdotal experience and the impressions I've gotten from what I've listened to.
