the whole fake reboot/remake angle to the first half of it is just extremely stupid and viewer-antagonistic for no real payoff

i mean that isnt really a fair summary of sotsu even with its many many issues. its focused on rika and satokos relationship so theyre the only characters who get any real focus or catharsis. thats like, fair. [...]
I think the issue is that it isn't actually focused on that until about a dozen episodes in. For the first few arcs, Satoko and Rika figure about as much as they did in those arcs of the VN: Demon-Deceiving Chapter is about Keiichi and Rena, Cotton-Deceiving Chapter is about Keiichi and the twins, and Curse-Deceiving Chapter is about Keiichi and Satoko. Rika gets little intermissions, but not enough for her to feel like the focus; Satoko gets even less. So it is a problem that Keiichi and co. don't get any development, especially since between Rena's madness being reality instead of a hallucination and Mion getting Hinamizawa Syndrome despite being specifically called out as too strong-willed and trusting to fall victim to it, it feels like it's tearing the original work's cast and conclusions down, even if those moments are clues to a larger mystery. I agree it isn't fair to characterize Sotsugyou entirely by those episodes; once it commits to Rika and Satoko as leads, that problem goes away. But it takes a very long time to get there.

IMO they should've advertised it as a sequel and done Village Destroying from Rika's perspective first. That would make more sense while still being hostile to the viewer for no reason

I stopped following the new Higurashi because it was retreading so much old ground it was tedious to watch week-to-week. I figured it'd be better to watch all at once, does it not get any better?

Eventually, yes. Twelve episodes in, Gou gets to its original content, which starts off a bit weak (lots of gore and misery porn) but gets stronger over time. Sotsu repeats Gou's sin by retreading (re-retreading?) Gou's arcs for all but the last two episodes of its run, but those final episodes are OK-to-good. Having seen it all, I wouldn't recommend forcing yourself through Sotsugyou if you weren't enjoying it—the good parts of the show could fit in a two-hour movie, and for a 39-episode anime that's the kiss of death

sotsugyou's best parts are things i would love watching, in a decent ova, adapted by people who don't make insane changes that have a net negative effect on the script

then again higurashi rei was adapted in ova form and i feel like i have to read the original vn in a not-machine tled form at some point because some parts of it just are presented way too insane

It was the first season of the remake that I fell off from (Gou?) but it's disappointing to hear the second season is even worse about it.

I might be able to handle it if I'm marathoning the whole thing. It was really boring to watch the same thing as the previous series happen week after week except for the final episode of each arc, so I put it on hold to maybe watch it all at once to get the payoff without having to wait a month each time.

see the thing it is not. a remake. it is explicitly a sequel. they just also decided to retread a bunch of arcs with the only major twists being that things actually are just arbitrarily hosed up now for no reason when the text of the original story is that everything that was happening had a hidden context. they just decided to market it as a remake for some insane reason.

Coxswain Balls

Yeah, I knew from the second episode that it wasn't a remake but the changes were so minor until the arc climax that it was boring to watch, especially coming hot off of marathoning the entire original series last summer.
