Came here after hearing the news and not using the site or posting in more than a decade. Lots of good memories on this site back when I was in college and I am glad it was created, it is a shame he was the type of person he was and I wish his family well.

My older brother was an abusive piece of poo poo and I never shed a tear for him when he killed himself. I found out after my brother died that he was molested as a child. For a long time I thought about opening this letter he sent me, but I still didn't want to read it. I was so far past forgiving him again. It wasn't until 2020, talking to my mom, that I pieced together that he was molested some years after he had started beating me. The idea I had that "maybe his demons were caused by another abuser" flew out the window. And it made me realize how stupid it was to even consider excusing his behavior. My brother hurt me, violently. I'm not a piece of poo poo like he was, I didn't turn into an abuser. Please don't try to think of excuses for abusers and abusive behavior. There are no excuses. It's not okay, it's never okay. Hope this helps anyone that knew Richard and is struggling to process how to remember him.
