Even Ricardo Lopez had the decency to set up the old 8mm camcorder when he blew his brains out after painting his entire body and mailing bombs to Bjork. Thats what disappoints me the most in Lowtax's death, a lack of showmanship.

drat, do I feel sorry for his kids. Suicide is the worst death because by its nature it never leaves answers, only questions. Suicide sucks. As to Lowtax, de mortuis nihil nisi bonum, so I can at least be glad he set up this wonderful place where I can mostly lurk, and over the years get my :tenbux: of value returned manyfold

As for newspaper articles? I have no idea why TheSun.uk is reporting on this. It's the sort of British tabloid that features Momo and Black Eyed Kids as front page stories (maybe it was The Star?). https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/celebrities/16707416/richard-lowtax-kyankas-ex-wife-megan-austin/ Why they are taking an interest just now is beyond me and now they are bringing one of his ex's into it. I read the article and it seems like someone clueless who just found out about SA and is trying to condense the entire history of the forums into several paragraphs. "The company was bought by YOSPOS for an undisclosed amount." Who is this mysterious YOSPOS organisation?

Twenty years ago I found these forums after reading the front page. My first thought was, “oh man, so many users are already here, I’m the last one in.” Today I’m scrolling through Rich’s Facebook, and there’s this old photo of his daughter falling asleep on him, and my heart just breaks.

Just thinking about how this situation compares to a few former friends who also created much-loved, interesting communities (smaller and IRL, though) and it's odd... these folks all have/had the capability to germinate these communities/spaces/etc. and then, to a man, they lose control as the communities grow organically and become resentful, bitter assholes who engage in varying degrees of self-harm rather than appreciating what they've managed to do. I guess it's hard to accept that it ain't all about you anymore, but it's brutal to watch.

Just weird, not sure how to parse this really. I only met the guy a few times (most famously in Vancouver for the Uwe Boll fight), and not in person for at least 15 years. Mentally I had kind of cut the cord after the abuse allegations came out the first time. And even then, at what level of abstraction are you at when you post on a forum a guy made over 20 years ago, and is no longer involved with? But really, at the end of the day, I didn't know the guy, despite interacting with something he was partially responsible for at least once a week for decades. I was glad the forum changed hands, that it was worth saving but that he wasn't the one who could save it. I'm not celebrating that he's dead, but there was little worth celebrating about the later stages of his life. Apropos of nothing, and to further prove how old I am, the news crossed slashdot and a former coworker of his posted the below. Note this person is not me, and I'll emphasize by focusing on how "funny" he was this might be trying to seem rehabilitating, but that's not my intent. Some guy on slashdot posted:

Everything with Lowtax just felt weird and disconnected. I could never tell if he was actually an rear end in a top hat, was pretending to be an rear end in a top hat because it was funny, or if he was randomly switching between those two. Was he really lying about his spine? It’s like the shock when I heard about the original domestic violence after seeing him with his wife and daughters on the middle Gaming Garbage streams. Scary to think what was going on under the surface.

No one who takes their own life acts with a clear accounting of things. I'm sad that he had flaws that outmatched his talents, and I'm sorry that he's gone and couldn't turn things around. A permanent solution to a temporary problem, as I myself was told in an earlier time. I knew him a little, and I'll miss him. Never really grew up. Goodbye, Richard. My condolences to his family and his friends, and sorry for the mess he's left. Xenopus fucked around with this message at 16:07 on Nov 13, 2021 |
