I do not listen to besties so maybe I dunno the concept of the podcast well enough to answer why they would make the subject of an episode of their podcast a game they intended to play little or none of. Why not instead play a game they would like to play

weekly podcast episodes mean there's a lot of games to keep up with an Justin and Griffin particularly do not play games as their primary job anymore

The original format when it launched in 2012 was that there would be 4 games featured each week (each host brings a game) and they would vote which was the "best" one, hence the title "besties" and the vestigal "...and I know the best game of the week!" in the intro of the podcast

Now they just pick a game to talk about every week, you know, like a podcast. but still not everybody got time for that

That’s hilarious, it’s like having a movie podcast but half the time saying “yeah didn’t have time to watch one this week, sorry folks”

Like why even do it then

The game each week is a new release, so there's not always something great. Even if it's a couple of them doing the deep dive on that game, the others will discuss what they've been playing and other news.

in other mcelroy things, sometimes I re-listen to the sawbones eps about worms just to hear justin be yucked out by the worms. we need a new worm episode
I'll also be yucked out but it'll be worth it

hell yeah another fan of wonderful. :respek:

imho it's been more or less better since they stripped it down to half hour-ish episodes and getting way less stressed about prepping their topics (which seems mostly to just be reading the wiki article about that topic anyway), which they did around the time they had their second kid. just a cool little chillout podcast with two people who love each other and are fun. occasionally i even learn about some new music to check out.

I definitely prefer the four topics per ep format, but I understand that it was basically impossible for them to research and record that with two kids, especially since it seems like at first at least, Gus was a... demanding child

I can’t do Wonderful, it legit makes me think about my ex too much and then I wind up feeling bad, alone, and bitter especially given how saccharineearnestly sweet Grif+Rach are together.

Tbh I’ve had that problem with all the McElroy stuff. I got into them in 2012/2013 and then in 2014 I started cohabitating with a lady who had been one of my best friends in college. I introduced her to the Brothers and she proceeded to eclipse me in enthusiasm and become a McElroy superfan.

We got in on TAZ on the ground floor, went to multiple live shows together, then that spread into other MaxFun stuff like Greatest Gen and Flophouse, etc. and finally all the McElroy spin-off things. We even briefly subscribed to Seeso (or whatever it was called) for the miniseries.

Anyway, TLDR we had a massively drawn-out and trauma-filled breakup at the end of 2018 and, TBH, I haven’t really listened to a McElroy show in over two years and I have no plans to start.

I like talking with you goons about them tho.

I’m pretty sure their take is “the Bachelor was a guilty pleasure for a while for us, but the reality is that it sucks. It sucks in terms of its production culture and how it’s made, and even if you isolate the themes and values of the show from its production those values also really suck too and it’s not something that we want to promote or be associated with anymore. The Bachelor is hella regressive and it doesn’t fit the McElroy brand” or something to that end.

A real hellraiser

Right before they quit covering it, there was a bachelorette season with the first black bachelorette and the show basically used racism and went out of their way to put her in situations with the most racist contestants for drama. Guys who should have been kicked off the show for stuff they said on camera(but not in front of her).

Then right after on a spinoff called Bachelor Paradise, a contestant accused the show of letting a guy get her unsafe levels of drunk and taking advantage of her.
