I've been working my way through Kojima's latest collections of essays recently, and he has a really touching piece about his father in the book.

quote:

The EMT repeatedly tried to determine whether my dad was conscious or not, but my dad couldn't answer. He just keep looking at me through his convulsions. His eyes looked like they were trying to tell me something. The next evening, without having been able to leave a will, my father passed away. He was 45. I was 13.

[...]

On that summer day, I was convinced that by losing my father in body, I'd lost him. But I was wrong. He is still inside me. I carry his voice within me; that is what he wanted to tell me back then. Within this book, I heard his voice, which had been sheltered within me for thirty-five years.

"Look after them."

Sometime, the day will come when I will pass my torch, my memes on to my children. When that time comes, I will look to them in that same way, and they will know. Everything will be alright because you are my children.

It's a short essay about a story called The Voices of the Hoshiyadori Café about a widowed mother and her 6 children, and how they carry on after the death of the "patriarch" and find their own places within the world.

Hello, Marvel marketing? Your PR team was so effective that it successfully implanted its vibrant and fully-realized characters into my mind. However, it may have gone too far and into the subconscious as I had a dream about Kingo last night. We were at a movie theater, most likely between repeated showings of the Eternals, and in the dark Kingo began to make sexual advances towards me. I was a bit flattered, and although it never rose to any objectionable level, his affections were ultimately unwanted. Sersi was also there and making advances but I felt this was coordinated beforehand as some sort of "sweeten the deal" thing. This has been in my thoughts all day and is rather uncomfortable, and I'm not sure how I can move past it to continue enjoying the most important superhero movie for BIPOC representation of the century.

I might be biased because I'm just a gigantic Kojima groupie but I haven't read an essay I haven't enjoyed yet, about halfway through the book. It's also given me a little side list of books I'd like to read too, since he does a lot of writing in the first half about just...other books he's read. It's part review, part reflection. Perfect for bite sized reading too, most essays are no more than 5 pages at most which is...surprising for Kojima.

i rewatched Spun tonight and I'm curious how it came to be that some unknown swedish director assembled this cast along with zwan/Billy Corgan for the soundtrack.

like 95% of the cast are heavy hitters with big resumes. why did they all sign on for this film about meth distribution/use in Eugene in the 90s?

ALSO: why does Amazon Prime offer content (like Spun) and then just edit the gently caress out of it?

like there are scenes that are blurred like Japanese porno and then other scenes that just have black boxes over John Leguizamo's dick and the audio literally bleeps any mention of the word oval office or pussy.

is Amazon prime run by Mormons?

e: they removed all of Josh Peck's appearances entirely what the hell is going on???

Åkerlund was a music video and ad director who had done some Smashing Pumpkins videos before, that's why Billy Corgan was on board. And he did videos for, like, Madonna, Paul McCartney and Britney Spears. And Coca Cola and Volkswagen and whatever else, so he probably was extremely well connected.

yeah I didn't know about his music video stuff but that makes sense. I'm still sort of baffled as to how this film got made (also I love it).
