There’s a lot of daylight between “for-profit prisons are bad and our justice system is optimized for putting as many people in them as possible” and “murderers should not walk free”

the better progressive take would be to call for rehabilitation but that doesn’t make for a good tweet

The intellectually lazy that go along with whatever allows them to ignore the lovely parts of their life? Yeah. If socialism somehow became the dominant ideology a bunch of them would just go along with it. If there are negative social consequences to being a right wing shithead and no greater propaganda structure to back them up, and they have their basic needs provided, most people are probably not really ready to actually die for their beliefs.

Some are going to cling to whatever little sliver of private property and priviledge and we see which ones are actually willing to die for the right to say the n-word and not get vaccinated. This number is probably unfortunately large but not 100%.

Diehard cultists and types like we ev and others that consciously think "actually, I am going to be a fascist, in those exact terms, and spend time thinking about how to mould the world to a more fascist future, from the safety of my off-site discord server/think tank", as well as those that demand they feel superior to the bottom portion of the population probably get to find out if B.J. Blazcowitz has a real world equivalent.

I mean I don't give a gently caress about their fate one way or the other, but I suspect support there is kinda soft as well, being more of a grift than anything. Asking if like weev or Richard Spencer are ready to die in order that black people have a lower minimum wage than white people or whatever the gently caress they like to go on about, is about like asking if Felix Biederman would sacrifice himself to get Bernie Sanders elected President or some poo poo.

But, of course, that's not how it actually works. Very, very few people are really willing to die for their beliefs, whether those beliefs are about improving the circumstances of them and theirs, or just making sure that everyone on Earth save for a tiny slice of chosen people are miserable all the time. But, a lot of people are able to convince themselves that, actually they won't die, that only other people will, but they can put themselves out there anyway and take actually pretty enormous risks, but they'll be fine because there are enough other people like them around them, that obviously one of them will die instead, and in that way embolden themselves to do pretty horrible (or heroic!) poo poo.

lock him up but don't throw away the key?

what he did was horrible, but i feel like in an actually just justice system there would be some way to rehabilitate an 18-year-old who has done horrible things rather than keeping him imprisoned for the next 70 years

yea I mean remember when that neo nazi in...Sweden I think...killed those kids and everyone in america freaked out because "HE CAN ONLY GET LIKE TEN YEARS MAX???" when the actual system was basically every ten years he'd be up for parole and his rehabilitation would be examined to see if he remains a threat to others or not. Spoiler alert, he's probably always going to be a threat to others, dude's still a proud nazi scumbag, but the system allows for room where you maybe don't have to keep a human in a cage for nearly a century by default.

I believe we have closing arguments today and the judge capped them at 2.5 hours, then a lot of jury instructions. I'm not sure if the jury will get to deliberate before being sent home for the weekend.

I just wanna say I covered a lot of trials when I worked as a reporter and this one is hosed up. I've seen outbursts, angry judges, frustrated prosecutors, aloof defenders, and remorseless murderers but this one really seems to go beyond all that.

I think Rittenhouse will walk. But his life will be forever tarnished and limited by his decisions, he'll always be the proverbial "that guy."
