New One Step Closer dropped, the tracks they've been releasing have been great so I have no doubts the full length is killer. Love me some melodic hardcore, and scratches that 'I wish Modern Life is War did a new record' itch for me. https://onestepcloserxxx.bandcamp.com/album/this-place-you-know

I'm getting back into lifting/running lately and would love my RIYL similar to this. Also this is kind of fantastic: https://twitter.com/rileybreck/status/1442205034138140680?s=20

After some disappointment with Citizen and Turnover I'm gun-shy about doing another deep dive with another band.

figure this is the place to ask: what’s a good replacement for Brand New. I’ve been trying for years but nothing grips me in the same way. Title Fight and HANL pretty much fills the gap but id be thankful to hear some recommendations if you have any.

Hey, I hope this is a good place to ask this question. A few months ago, I stumbled on a conservative pop punk band (maybe here!). It was Blink182ish pop and the song I heard called out a bunch of Obama-era democratic politicians and personalities by name. I know that's vague, but I only listened to about 60 seconds before getting douche chills. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? It's the worst thing I've ever heard and I would like to inflict it on others.

I loved Brand New with all of my body, heart & soul, and pretty much anything off Your Favorite Weapon is still awesome and “safe” to listen to, but once you go past there even starting on Deja Entendu there’s a bunch of songs where I’m like “wow this was a really heavy song for me in college but yeah given new context this song could easily be about hating yourself for being a pedofile” or “gosh in a different light yeah this song really seems to be about being disgusted with yourself because of ‘inner darkness’ which I am now forced to assume means grooming a child” Like, as the band matured and got darker and heavier and a little droney, I got the sense that I was growing and changing along side them. We were all kids from New York, growing up and becoming men together… so when I was getting hosed up and getting high I was like “Man Jesse is really going through it, he gets it!” but now I see we had, uh, very different demons. The vibes are off! which loving sucks because Science Fiction is one of my favorite albums of all time. Waste, Same Logic//Teeth, Can’t Get It Out! So many bangers, it’s so loving good! Then I remember I should be mad at Jesse for being a huge piece of poo poo

Pretty much everything you said is my experience with Brand New. I ended up listening to Nobody Moves from the leaked demos when I had a part of the lyrics stuck in my head and couldn’t figure out what song it was a few days ago. It was the first time I listened to a song of theirs since everything was revealed, and it was so disappointing. As much as I loved that song it just wasn’t the same.

Bust Rodd posted:pretty much anything off Your Favorite Weapon is still awesome and “safe” to listen to Been trying really hard not to get into this debate, but I can't stop thinking about this sentence. The dude wishes death upon multiple people in multiple songs on this album, and I get that we all like that kind of angst but it's not exactly Healthy Behavior. And then you get to Deja Entendu, which even without the later revelations has multiple songs about questionably consensual sexual activities. I have bands I don't listen to for various reasons related to the artists behavior (Jank/Panuccis Pizza and McCafferty being the ones that come to mind first), so I'm not gonna tell people how to enjoy music or that you need to separate the art from the artist. But when it comes to Brand New I always find it *so weird* cause the subject matter of the songs was questionable the whole time and people are always like IT MEANT SO MUCH TO ME BUT NOW IT'S TAINTED! Anyway I'll hang up and listen and also leave Saves The Day as an exercise for the reader

Y’all need to learn to separate the artist from the art. This poo poo ain’t nothin to a black metal fan. Enjoy the music or don’t, just don’t put the artists on a pedestal.

I mean, some of the all time greatest records in the genre are functionally shrines to toxic masculinity and feelings of entitlement towards women, that’s just part & parcel for some of this stuff. Wishing that someone was dead because you used to be their best friend and now your ex girlfriend is making out with them isn’t exactly mature or even healthy, but that’s where records like Tell All Your Friends come from, that level of pain and betrayal and anger that you really experience at the end of your teens, when you’re becoming an adult but you’re not remotely prepared for it. In a sense that’s what you’re signing up for when you download the album or buy the CD. Deja Entendu’s biggest song is literally the story of how the front man was molested and assaulted as a child, so we’re in bristlingly dark territory to start with, but those songs, for me at least, were about coping and dealing with pain, not necessarily causing pain and coping with the guilt, which is what a boat load of their music became. I just assumed it was all about growing older and estranged from your family due to wealth and drugs.

art no longer "belongs" to the artist once it's released into the world for public consumption. any song written by some fuckhead for whatever fuckhead reason that resonated with you as a teenager bc you applied your growing pains to it and it helped you cope becomes exactly that. it's yours. love it or don't. edit: also, your feelings of righteousness or virtue aren't going to resonate with anyone else but you if you decide to shun something you liked before you knew more about the person who created it. it might matter to other people with their head up their rear end and maybe that's what you want out of people in your life? but at the end of the day who really cares.
