Unfortunately, it is only with the wisdom of time and the gift of hindsight that we have learnt that rather than banning them and causing the trumpocalypse, We instead should have executed them behind the chemical sheds and fed the bodies to the perverts.

Oh, I'm not blaming Lowtax for this, there's already plenty of things he does deserve blame for. It's just a weird butterfly-effect thing. Banning creepy pedos from a forum is an absolutely good thing, yet it somehow led to the worst outcome.

It's like if at the end of Back to the Future, 1985 ends up being a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and we find out it's all because Marty didn't shout racial slurs at future Hill Valley mayor Goldie Wilson when he saw him in the diner back in 1955. Like, what lesson should I be learning from this? Reality is stupid.

Maybe it's optimistic of me but to me, the obvious reason to turn it down is because it's this beautiful thing you've created and you don't want to see it compromised by some corporate owner. I wish beyond measure that he had put the money the site earned back into it instead of letting it languish, but I'm glad he didn't sell out personally.

Also it wasn't 13 million or nothing, it was a very successful and profitable business that was set to make him a lot of money year after year, if not that much. 13 million in 2006 might have meant being broke by 2010. I don't think he was that self-aware, but I believe him when he said he was still having fun back then.

It's easy to say when you're not actually in the position to do it, but I wouldn't sell to some corporate buyer for 13 million, even now. I'm fortunate that I'm in a position to say no to such an offer and I want better for this place. If some wealthy dude wants to sponsor this place with the equivalent of a university building named after them, go ahead and break out the checkbook, but the site is not for sale.

I think, when you create something, the reasons for it have a big impact on whether you find it palatable to sell it.

Something like this, where a community has sprung up around it, far beyond the front page content, there's a different kind of attachment. Taking a big buyout and losing control of the creation (last year's events notwithstanding) would probably feel like abandoning it. I probably would have done the same thing in that situation.

It's really been unfortunate to see the decline of the founder of something that's been a big part of my life for the last many years. I'm really happy you stepped up and were able to take the reins when things were very much in danger of disappearing.

It loving sucks that anyone's life turns out the way his did, for any and all reasons. Many of us had written him off over the past year or so, and for good reason, but that doesn't mean the whole situation hasn't been lovely.

I feel for his exes, but most of all for his kids. Nobody should grow up without a father (at least a father figure, it doesn't matter who it is), and I hope someone is able to step up into that role for them. As a child of a single parent, there are many things I missed out on, but also many things other people stepped up for. And for those people I am forever grateful.

In closing: gently caress you, Lowtax, for making me leave my bookmarks and actually go to GBS.

Didn't it lead them to go to 4chan though, giving the site a significantly larger and more active userbase that started the momentum? I mean, I agree that if it wasn't SA -> 4chan -> 8chan it probably would've been something else to fill those roles, but this is the way it happened and the form it took. If 4chan had never become a thing maybe Qanon would have started up on some other website, or maybe some totally different conspiracy theory would have formed instead. But this is what we got.

I suppose that the pedo and hentai bans must have resulted in goons posting more on 4chan because they couldn't do post about these topics on the forums, but 4chan also quickly attracted non-goons so I don't know how significant those bans were on 4chan's growth.

I agree that Qanon wouldn't have existed without 4chan, but I'm pretty sure that similar conspiracy theories would have formed regardless. For example Pizzagate, which was similar but had preceded Qanon, had started on Twitter.

I don't know about lowtax the account, but lowtax the man made an alt and came into the thread that exposed him beating his women and attempted to defend himself anonymously.

It was crystal clear what he was doing, and he threw a tantrum when people laughed at him. Then he tried to cozy up to FYAD, who he had just thrown under the bus in an interview with Vice.

I think that's how it went down.

Regardless of if the pedo and hentai bans were the big trigger or not, 4chan is an evolution out of SA anyway given that moot posted here and recruited users here and it was a direct influence on the site. But like, I totally agree there's way bigger societal and political forces at hand that led to all this bullshit and SA really is just a footnote in all of it anyway. But like I said earlier, even if it would have happened anyway whether it be on Stile Project or eBaums World or fuckin' Neopets or whatever, this is still the particular shape it took at the end of the day.

That's to say nothing of the rest of SA's influence on and weird intersections with mainstream culture from launching early memes, Let's Plays (Twitch doesn't exist without them), Slenderman, the fact that Vilerat died in Benghazi, dril and Weird Twitter which eventually became the way everyone talked on Twitter and then TV and real life. Jumping on the "what this site made" bandwagon, Robert Evans of Behind the Bastards name-drops SA from time to time, and he mostly credits SA and his MMORPG days with helping him be a better human because it forced him to interact with people he normally wouldn't and without his normal prejudice because....it's the internet, right? And I actually totally agree. I loving grew up in the cesspool of South Texas, so SA and the like really helped me meet people of different colors, gay people, trans people, WOMEN...and I mean, I still probably suffer from being a bit rear end-backwards still, but this site has helped me learn to interact with people I'd never get the chance to otherwise, and I'm a better person for it I think.

So, that's a thing.
