TrixRabbi posted:So by banning them it effectively just stopped SA from being the place where that kind of monstrosity could fester. Kiwi Farms, 4chan, all that, that negative energy was going to go somewhere and the bans and paywall just ensured it wasn't here. Unfortunately, it is only with the wisdom of time and the gift of hindsight that we have learnt that rather than banning them and causing the trumpocalypse, We instead should have executed them behind the chemical sheds and fed the bodies to the perverts.

TrixRabbi posted:Like, that domino meme about Lowtax banning hentai leading to the Capitol riots is in effect true, but also he can't really be personally blamed for what happened outside of his responsibility on 4chan and 8chan. Like if you kick a guy starting fights out of your bar and they then go beat someone up down the street. It's like if at the end of Back to the Future, 1985 ends up being a post-apocalyptic wasteland, and we find out it's all because Marty didn't shout racial slurs at future Hill Valley mayor Goldie Wilson when he saw him in the diner back in 1955. Like, what lesson should I be learning from this? Reality is stupid.

Jeffrey of YOSPOS posted:Maybe it's optimistic of me but to me, the obvious reason to turn it down is because it's this beautiful thing you've created and you don't want to see it compromised by some corporate owner. I wish beyond measure that he had put the money the site earned back into it instead of letting it languish, but I'm glad he didn't sell out personally. I think, when you create something, the reasons for it have a big impact on whether you find it palatable to sell it. Something like this, where a community has sprung up around it, far beyond the front page content, there's a different kind of attachment. Taking a big buyout and losing control of the creation (last year's events notwithstanding) would probably feel like abandoning it. I probably would have done the same thing in that situation. It's really been unfortunate to see the decline of the founder of something that's been a big part of my life for the last many years. I'm really happy you stepped up and were able to take the reins when things were very much in danger of disappearing. It loving sucks that anyone's life turns out the way his did, for any and all reasons. Many of us had written him off over the past year or so, and for good reason, but that doesn't mean the whole situation hasn't been lovely. I feel for his exes, but most of all for his kids. Nobody should grow up without a father (at least a father figure, it doesn't matter who it is), and I hope someone is able to step up into that role for them. As a child of a single parent, there are many things I missed out on, but also many things other people stepped up for. And for those people I am forever grateful. In closing: gently caress you, Lowtax, for making me leave my bookmarks and actually go to GBS.

TrixRabbi posted:Didn't it lead them to go to 4chan though, giving the site a significantly larger and more active userbase that started the momentum? I mean, I agree that if it wasn't SA -> 4chan -> 8chan it probably would've been something else to fill those roles, but this is the way it happened and the form it took. If 4chan had never become a thing maybe Qanon would have started up on some other website, or maybe some totally different conspiracy theory would have formed instead. But this is what we got. I suppose that the pedo and hentai bans must have resulted in goons posting more on 4chan because they couldn't do post about these topics on the forums, but 4chan also quickly attracted non-goons so I don't know how significant those bans were on 4chan's growth. I agree that Qanon wouldn't have existed without 4chan, but I'm pretty sure that similar conspiracy theories would have formed regardless. For example Pizzagate, which was similar but had preceded Qanon, had started on Twitter.

TrixRabbi posted:I think about this a lot too and in a weird way it's the thing that gave SA staying power and kept the site from becoming an unusable pile of poo poo, but at the same time I think the riff raff had to go somewhere. Kiwi Farms, 4chan, all that, that negative energy was going to go somewhere and the bans and paywall just ensured it wasn't here. If they didn't gather (and then get expelled) from here it would of been from somewhere else. Their is an alternate universe where Stile Project gets the blame for incubating the alt-right.

Unfortunately, it happens far less often than it should.

QuickbreathFinisher posted:what was lowtaxs last post here I don't know about lowtax the account, but lowtax the man made an alt and came into the thread that exposed him beating his women and attempted to defend himself anonymously. It was crystal clear what he was doing, and he threw a tantrum when people laughed at him. Then he tried to cozy up to FYAD, who he had just thrown under the bus in an interview with Vice. I think that's how it went down.

Jumping on the "what this site made" bandwagon, Robert Evans of Behind the Bastards name-drops SA from time to time, and he mostly credits SA and his MMORPG days with helping him be a better human because it forced him to interact with people he normally wouldn't and without his normal prejudice because....it's the internet, right? And I actually totally agree. I loving grew up in the cesspool of South Texas, so SA and the like really helped me meet people of different colors, gay people, trans people, WOMEN...and I mean, I still probably suffer from being a bit rear end-backwards still, but this site has helped me learn to interact with people I'd never get the chance to otherwise, and I'm a better person for it I think. So, that's a thing.
