I am a spectacularly bad poster and everyone in the Schadenfreude thread hates my guts.
My dad died in a sudden accident when I was 8. It sucked, although I'm under no illusions about the fact that him and my mum were going through a toxic and unhealthy period so if he'd lived my childhood would have sucked in a different way.

My sister has had two kids by two different dads, who are not coincidentally the only two people I've ever genuinely hated on this earth for the respective emotional and physical abuse they gave her. However the dad of the first kid seems to have genuinely changed, and now he's able to be a good dad to my nephew and a positive influence in his life.

The dad of my younger nephew is dead from alcoholism, and that's absolutely good riddance because if he'd lived he would have hosed up everyone's lives even more.

I guess my point here is its very difficult to speculate about the overall trajectory of Lowtax's life and the potential for reconciliation or positive contribution to his childrens'. His suicide draws a permanent line under all of that, that's the terrifying existential reality of death, but hopefully eventually his kids can appreciate the lives they have and not be too haunted by what could or should have been.

If you're ever reading this, kids, at least know that thousands of idiots across the world having a space to debate your dad's legacy and poo poo on it if they desire is absolutely testament to that legacy. Either because or in spite of Lowtax we wouldn't be here without him so that's something, at least.

Posting about putting people on ignore is always a pretty weird self-own but posting a screenshot to prove you have them on ignore is by far my favorite :discourse:

Like by all means use the ignore function if it helps you not-engage with idiots, or don't, whatever, but posting about it is just the dumbest poo poo

Man, remember how Lowtax would constantly come in here and say the site was a financial drain and he couldn't afford hosting costs so it was maybe going to have to shut down, so goons flooded his Patreon with thousands of dollars. Then it turns out the hosting costs are like mid-four figures and the site easily makes enough money to cover it month to month from forums purchases.

In all seriousness, Lowtax and his site gave teenage me so many hours of free entertainment (yes, I joined right before the $10 registration fee).

I credit this place with helping me mature socially. I'll explain.

These forums have lots of edgy humor but the one thing that they taught me, weirdly, was how to separate that from reality. That's the difference between this place and what you're seeing all over the news today... Facebook people who believe in Q, Twitter people who shout about mask requirements at Trader Joe's, Parler people who print out memes and hold them at protests... Those morons are bringing their online profiles to the real world.

Something Awful's humor was clearly defined as an internet-based movement. We lived our disgusting lives on the internet, and left the rest of the world out of it.

Something Awful gave shy, teenage, awkward me a way to interact with like-minded people. Without this site, I might have been shy and awkward my whole life. Without you terrible goons, I may have ended up drifting aimless.

Anyway, thank you Lowtax, and gently caress you too, but mostly thank you. You're begging the angels for cookie money in heaven now.

This sums up my feelings. I'm going back to lurking more.
