I'm exaggerating, but I find it harder and harder to ignore all the "they made Ozeki Shodai fight Sekiwake East Takayasu to protect Shodai's rank" and "Isegahama is in charge of match fixing and that's why Teru got this matchup instead of that one" stuff, and it's to the point wherei just don't enjoy watching his videos anymore.

Sorry I'm late
I think that every single person on the banzuke should have the right to challenge the yokozunas at any time. If someone from any division below Makuuchi wins, they get automatically promoted up to the bottom of the maegashira.

Just a stream of bold 15 and 35 year olds trying to beat the best.

It's a rough situation though, lets look at who's he's losing to:

Yeah, he lost to good guys, but it wasn’t like he was some scrub that lucked his way into a Sanyaku spot that should have gotten destroyed by them. He was one of the best non-Yokozuna ever. Like he was a better Kisenosato when he was on. At the very least he should have broken even against everyone outside of Hak and Asa.

Some tasty matchups in the first day.

Takayasu Vs Endo and Takakekisho vs Wakatakakage are highlights for me, with both Taka's coming off injury blighted bashos we get to see them opening their tournaments against two rikishi in Endo and Wakatakakage who built some momentum and saw themselves promoted into the high Ms ranks.

Slightly fearful for big Papayasu but an early win against a high flyer might allow him to Impose His Style of Sumo this time out.

Ozeki Backscratcher's Club was real and strong and each other's friends.

It was a weird time ozeki-wise; in the 15+ years from September of 1983 to January of 1999 there were a total of three ozeki promotions where the guy never made yokozuna, and then from March 99 to Jan 02 there were six. Of those, four lasted at least close to 5 years as ozeki, and two did more than 10 years. (Plus Kotooshu getting joined then in early 06 and lasted 8 years.) So you had the same few members of an elite club, fighting each other, at the same rank, every basho, for years.

C'mere, goonzekidom! Usually there's all sorts of updates about wrestlers feeling healthier than ever, competing with a new couple of injuries, stubbing their toes, etc. going into a basho. Not sure I've ever felt this in the dark going into an event before, so I'm just gonna assume everyone is operating at peak performance.
