Bobstar posted:MMT has nothing to do with the tax code. It's a framework for understanding that currency-issuing governments aren't constrained by a lack of money, that government spending isn't funded by taxation, that money doesn't "come from" the private sector being all wealth-createy, and that government deficits aren't especially bad, but surpluses are because the government's surplus is the economy's lack of money (by definition). But winning that point only moves language from 'can the state spend' to 'should the state spend' which is what actually happens anyway. When theres a financial crisis or a pandemic then the state can spend whatever it likes and only a small powerless group actually worry about raising the funds and yet leftwing spending plans are inherently cast as irresponsible and excessive because funding arguments are just rationalisations for actions that classes want to see happen anyway. The ruling class rules so money is always available for their class needs and nothing is available for threats to their power, the dorky working class argues about propensity to save versus spend and how government spending on services has a great multiplier effect and appeals to credibility of their plans and whatnot and socialists argue for the destruction of the class system by overthrowing the ruling class. If you actually possess the power to hammer through your particular agenda against the wishes of the rich then you have the power to break their power at the source rather than grant them legitimacy and commit to fighting a long reformist (losing) battle against their power by loving around with currency and taxation rates. Also im very excited about the Kings Speech this Christmas.

What this analysis ignores is the existence of the middle class, who have both wealth and wages. So what their interests actually _are_ is subject to analysis, debate and even persuasion. Since Thatcher, they mostly side with capital, largely because unearned money is sweeter than money you have to leave the house to get. But that could change if a government proposed a lever that would make wage levels as much a matter of politics as house prices and tax rates currently are. MMT can offer that, on a scale a minimum wage never could. Elections are decided by how the middle class votes. And, in the UK at least, an elected government has pretty much unlimited power. Certainly far more room to manoeuvre than a typical dictatorship, which has to spend virtually all of its energy holding on to power instead of changing things.

Guavanaut posted:Death is one of those things that isn't possible to avoid forever* and some of those people would have probably died of something else if the pandemic hadn't happened given the age of the population, but looking at trends it seems 60-80 thousand of those Covid-19 deaths were avoidable. Another complication in the math is that there is a larger than zero number of people who died unncessarily soon not of having covid, but of not getting treatment for other illnesses in time because of covid measures (eg. not able to go to cancer screening) or of depression and lack of activity caused by lockdowns and quarantines. How do you count them? Some of them might have survived longer if there were less anti-covid measures, but then more people would have died directly by covid-19. Another thing to consider is that comparing covid deaths between eg. China and Britain is not that straightforward, first you get different reporting standards and secondly Britain's population is relatively elder than China's. Meanwhile Italy has the eldest population in all of Europe and unsurprisingly they also had the worst epidemic anywhere.

Nenonen posted:Some of them might have survived longer if there were less anti-covid measures, but then more people would have died directly by covid-19. Elsewhere in the world has shown that two week targeted actual lockdowns did more good than 18 month long "work from home if you can unless you don't want to then don't" lockdowns, and presumably that would have less of a drawn out impact on people's access to cancer services or contact with family. There's also things like contact tracing (whether by advanced app or hi viz and clipboard) thermal imagers at ports (good for islands and other places without large porous land borders) actually controlling the borders (this means disrupting business meetings rather than waving your fist at dinghies) and all sorts of other things that are anti-covid measures that don't necessarily de-prioritize other medical issues, all of which were completely ignored in the early stages of the pandemic (we didn't know fully whether masks and improved public ventilation would work until a few months in, but a randomly selected bunch of 17th century plague doctors and miasma theorists would have made a better guess than the government).
