Truth be told when I had a broken collarbone and was in a sling for months (and then again after surgery) I would have loved something like that. I felt so gross not being able to reach even with a soap brush because of the pain it caused. It's me, I'm shower OSHA.

Christ, what an absolute mess. If you don't want to read the Mail then the short version is first time buyers excavated a basement under their two bedroom flat and the whole house fell in, so now the insurers of the flat above and the neighbours both sides are going after them for damages. Their own insurers won't pay out and neither will the building firm (who have now gone bust and set up under another name anyway) business insurance. They still owe £700 a month mortgage for the next 20 years on the remaining hole in the ground and to cap it off they didn't even own the house properly - it was a freehold arrangement where you own the apartment but pay perpetual ground rent to a second party. The titleholder is unsurprisingly suing them. Just a mass of bad financial decisions and worse luck from the top down.

Taking out a mortgage to buy a house, but also simultaneously paying rent in perpetuity for the house you supposedly "own" is a very British thing.

Also instead of taking the hint from their scumbag builder and filing for bankruptcy, thus getting to walk away from that whole mess, they instead took out another mortgage (probably cosigned by friends and family because I doubt any bank would give them a look otherwise) to buy a different property, while still paying for the old one.

Jabor posted:Taking out a mortgage to buy a house, but also simultaneously paying rent in perpetuity for the house you supposedly "own" is a very British thing. Not really. It's pretty american to buy a trailer then slap it on land you have to lease. There's a neighborhood in east Colorado Springs that constantly has reasonably priced houses, on foundations, but then you read the fine print and the land under it is only leased. So you're stuck paying a mortgage on the structure and a lease on the land. It's really annoying when one of those pops up on zillow, because it will be half the price of comparable listings and then you're hit with $750-1000+/mo lot lease that you get to renew like it's a slot in a trailer park.
