also, i'd like to mention that any reactors built post ~mid 70s or so are likely to keep running for up to like 80 years and maybe even longer. the insane fear people have of anything nuclear means they're over-engineered to absolute gently caress. and that's a really good thing

there's a reactor about 100km drive away from where i live, and after an overhaul in 2000, everyone who works there privately says it's good to run until at least 2063 at current outlook, and possibly even past that date. official messaging is still 2043 + a possible 10 year extension, but even that is already a 20 year extension over initial plans, so basically the expected lifetime has doubled from 40 to 70 or 80 years lol

It's irritating as hell that every thread about every country is in fact about America.

As someone who has nothing do do with America, there is a big difference between talking up China and talking up the DPRK. Yes, they are both opposed to the USA in a bunch of ways, but while China has a lot of success to point at to justify the less pleasant stuff, the DPRK is... well, like someone said upthread, a run-of-the-mill authoritarian little country, with poor overall standards of living.

But, because it is opposed to the USA, and almost certainly only because of that, there is this weird love for it itt.

My favorite stupid nuclear story: Taiwan built a brand spanking new nuclear reactor (reactor #4), but after the Fukushima disaster, in a populist frenzy, the political elites from both parties pushed for a referendum to never used it. Now DPP is pushing for an energy policy that rely on import natural gas so heavily, it will run out of energy to generate power in 3-4 days if and when a cross strait crisis happen. They also have asked TSMC to "figure out way to generate power with diesel themselves" because there isn't enough power.

It just shows how much of the “crisis” is theater, Taiwan couldn’t sustain a serious disruption of trade much less genuine military action. It is simply about delaying integration as apart of a faltering containment strategy.

thankfully i didn't see the dog snuff film but if you think doing horrific and abusive things to animals is uniquely chinese you are a loving idiot and an unambiguous racist. visit your local shelter, try not to cry too much, then remember those are the lucky (?) ones that are still alive. the usa, along with most of the west, are dystopian hellholes that can't even care for humans, never mind provide sufficient funding and services to take care of dogs, cats, or pretty much every other kind of domestic animal or wildlife despite there being plenty of people ready and willing to do that work.

china is still working on being a better place in this regard, but they are actually working on it instead of giving barebones funding to animal shelters that can barely keep stray dogs out of rich neighborhoods. there are young party members taking up the cause and trying to get animal sancuaries and the like running. i think the public backlash to the dog that the quarantine workers killed, and that this outstanding young party member got featured on CGTN, shows that these kinds of efforts are making serious ground and doing right by the creatures that helped our species become what it is today.

remember China is 1/6 of the human pop. It's north america and europe and australia and russia combined for population. So when you see some video you gotta ask "would this shock me if this event happened once somewhere in Europe (all of it), Russia, Canada, Mexico, USA or Australia?"

edit: actually you can include central american and the caribbean and still be under China's population

it's easy to go fishing for extreme events.

he’s an artist who’s done some interesting art but said the wrong things a couple times and the Chinese government decided to punish him unrelentingly in a truly vindictive fashion for decades as a warning to other Chinese artists to not let their international fame and prestige make them think they’ll suddenly have more human rights or be allowed to criticize the glorious party.

China's laws against e-cig is also very hush (as though nowhere as hush the new US e-cig policy) for the reason of protecting the tax revenue.
