My favorite stupid nuclear story: Taiwan built a brand spanking new nuclear reactor (reactor #4), but after the Fukushima disaster, in a populist frenzy, the political elites from both parties pushed for a referendum to never used it. Now DPP is pushing for an energy policy that rely on import natural gas so heavily, it will run out of energy to generate power in 3-4 days if and when a cross strait crisis happen. They also have asked TSMC to "figure out way to generate power with diesel themselves" because there isn't enough power.

while I know the anti China propaganda from the US is in overdrive right now, the Chinese officials beating a tiny dog to death over Covid is sad. Maybe because I have a tiny dog and I cant even imagine, but ugh. makes me sick to say but why not just shoot it . . . and to tell the lady you're not do something like that then do it anyways!! this isn't so much "grr China bad" as that particular story is sad. and it looks like Chinese people were just as outraged as the rest of the world about it as well.

It just shows how much of the “crisis” is theater, Taiwan couldn’t sustain a serious disruption of trade much less genuine military action. It is simply about delaying integration as apart of a faltering containment strategy.

thankfully i didn't see the dog snuff film but if you think doing horrific and abusive things to animals is uniquely chinese you are a loving idiot and an unambiguous racist. visit your local shelter, try not to cry too much, then remember those are the lucky (?) ones that are still alive. the usa, along with most of the west, are dystopian hellholes that can't even care for humans, never mind provide sufficient funding and services to take care of dogs, cats, or pretty much every other kind of domestic animal or wildlife despite there being plenty of people ready and willing to do that work. china is still working on being a better place in this regard, but they are actually working on it instead of giving barebones funding to animal shelters that can barely keep stray dogs out of rich neighborhoods. there are young party members taking up the cause and trying to get animal sancuaries and the like running. i think the public backlash to the dog that the quarantine workers killed, and that this outstanding young party member got featured on CGTN, shows that these kinds of efforts are making serious ground and doing right by the creatures that helped our species become what it is today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wq2Oaa9qZsI

remember China is 1/6 of the human pop. It's north america and europe and australia and russia combined for population. So when you see some video you gotta ask "would this shock me if this event happened once somewhere in Europe (all of it), Russia, Canada, Mexico, USA or Australia?" edit: actually you can include central american and the caribbean and still be under China's population it's easy to go fishing for extreme events. Although I wonder if this will shake out like the tutoring shutdown since as mentioned in the article the Chinese government is signaling it would like to clamp down on smoking
