CAT INTERCEPTOR posted:Oh. Oh woooow. Thats far worse than I thought it would be. gently caress that guy. I think Matt's a bit hard done by because he's strongly opinionated and has financial success, which yes is partly because he comes from a privileged background (which he fully admits) but also, the guy's a hardworker too. Recently he's been talking about mental health struggles too, which I think is great for a guy in his position to do, it can reach people who otherwise might not hear the message. https://twitter.com/TheSmokingTire/status/1458435829492224008 A little like Smee150 too. Yes he comes across as a classic posh voiced rich kid and has many expensive supercars (that he regularly drives hard), but again, he's worked hard for his success, posting an average of a video a day since Youtube started, and it sounds like his background was "comfortable" not uber wealthy. Worth checking out the interview he did with Jonny Smith.

I can't imagine how they last 50,000 miles. It's a shame because these guys look like they could rebuild that engine blindfolded. Also Marty from MCM seems like an absolute top bloke and it would break my heart to find out he's not. Also, in the newest roadkill garage, freiburger is going full boomer, pulling the hellcat out of the general mayhem for a carb'd 440, and wanting to take the ford 9 inch out for a dodge 8 3/4. next thing you know he's going to want to do a showroom restoration and ask $150k for it at barrett jackson

He didn't want it to be a drag car and having all of that extra complexity in the car is really not needed. They had to put the ENTIRE harness from a hellcat into the car to get the motor to work. It also had the steering wheel and stuff from a hellcat which looks really stupid in that car. Also he is not really setup to work with late model stuff where as he has tons of stuff for older mopar motors, as he mentions he had a forged crank for it just laying around.

It's ultimately his car and he can do whatever he wants, but it seems to me he took something interesting and made it less interesting. The swap was done 6 years ago before the hellcat was sold as a crate engine with a stand-alone harness. related: Birdsong has a 3-part series on the chassis restoration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlnDeFLqhhg That car was unbelievably jacked, way beyond what freiburger talked about in the episode. It's hard to tell which inconsistencies were 50 years of abuse and which were factory chrysler, but it was a crazy amount of work.

Don't forget it also failed, repeatedly, in ways they couldn't fix because it was a bunch of electronics and software gobbledygook. Like when they took it to the rally school and had to limp it down the course because it refused to run at anything more than that. Late model engine swaps (of American V8s at least) are incredibly boring IMO and the only thing slightly novel about it was that it was a swap that hadn't really been done before, or at least done in an accessible way. It's not like the Hellcat motor was some magical thing that made huge power - like just within Roadkill itself they've built crate engines on carbs that made hundreds more HP than the Hellcat motor did, and they weren't any less streetable than the final General Mayhem build wound up being.

It was a wild idea at the time hampered by lack of electronics support, hence having to transplant literally everything across. If you wanted to do it properly you'd presumably just slap the engine in and rewire to an aftermarket ECU/TCU, but they didn't have time with their schedule so it just got Roadkilled in. Which hey, is wild in itself! That they got it working as well as it ended up working (aforementioned failure notwithstanding) is a miracle in itself! But all the modern poo poo slapped in looked dumb, and ultimately, it's his car and he liked it better the other way, so he's putting it back. Anyone else is welcome to build their own Hellcat swapped clapped out Charger, what someone else does with theirs is up to them. To me, late model engine swaps aren't any more or less boring than slapping the same boring cam and carb at a boring old motor that we've been doing for like 70 years cos Freiburger or Dulcich can fix it on the side of the road with a screwdriver and a hammer (except for the times they can't). Some swaps are good and some aren't so good. Here's a good example, LS swapped E30's aren't uncommon, right? Probably pretty boring yeah? Except these guys built a stunning 8-into-1 exhaust and the thing sounds WILD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI9kDNyV8W0
