The Trans Mountain pipeline has been shut down temporarily due to widespread rains and flooding in British Columbia.

Trans Mountain Corp. spokeswoman Ali Hounsell says the precautionary move was taken due to the flooding situation in the area of Hope, B.C.

Like the funny thing about the technophile approach to climate change is that it's actually based on completely faulty assumptions with no basis in historical fact.

There's this weird and completely incorrect idea that we have, as a species, consistently developed technological solutions to problems. We haven't. We've developed various technologies that may or may not have filled some specific need and then built our civilization around them. There generally aren't a lot of examples of humanity facing some pressing and immediate problem and coming up with a solution on the spot, especially when we don't already have an existing framework to use.

I think the whole situation where we were given a literal miracle vaccine for covid from tech and still hosed it all up proves we absolutely will not tech our way out of climate change

pack a bag with whatever you would need to sleep in an airport for some nights. some clothes, but also a few comforts like a travel pillow, ear plugs/eye mask, toiletries, etc. because the reality is you'll probably be in a shelter that's similar to an airport like what happened with hurricane katrina evacuees

I preach the doctrine of iodine tincture to all who will hear it

It's a very effective water purifier and it can be used to disinfect wounds. Only problem is it also makes water taste pretty bad. You can counteract that with vitamin C after purification, but you have to be careful not to reuse a container with residual vitamin c for further purification because it will neutralize the iodine. You could also just not be a big baby about it and drink it down, you're probably in a desperate situation if you're falling back on it anyway. It's pretty cheap and a liter of 2% iodine will purify thousands of liters of water

Yeah, and it's a perfect analogy for the situation, too.

The vaccines weren't really a "miracle" like we wanted them to be. They didn't remove the need for NPIs, they just gave us a legitimate shot of solving the problem if we were also willing to do the hard stuff. We weren't, so we're hosed. There are costly "solutions" to climate change that can help us mitigate its effects and reduce future harm, but we have to actually cut consumption and growth alongside them. We won't, so we're hosed.

it does taste funny but no way does it taste bad enough to necessitate more additives or avoiding iodine altogether.

I have a couple of bottles of iodine tablets for hard emergencies at home and in both cars and at home there's a go bag with one of these with a few extra filters: https://www.katadyngroup.com/us/en/item~p6730

I've very afraid of not having drinking water.

I've always got our hiking bag packed and ready to go with the 10 essentials and extras. The cars have the same.

Reminds me that I should get more thermal blankets for the car bags.

I also just ordered really good goggles with no airvents in case we get caught in fire / heavy smoke for home and the car. 2 sets for everywhere.

To make things even worse in the PNW, it froze last night. Saturated ground + a big freeze = frost wedging. I wouldn't be surprised to see some fresh landslides today. More rain is expected on Thursday, so more landslides there as well. It's all landslides, all the way down, is what I'm getting at here.

I woke up having a panic because I didn't realize it was supposed to freeze already and hadnt unhooked my hose and insulated the spigot.

One of the better water purifying solutions is "Polar Pure." It's just a jar of iodine crystals you mix with water but is extremely cheap per-gallon and one jar does like 2,000 liters. Backpackers usually carry it but it's going to be vastly superior to any kind of bulk tablet solution since you'd need like 30lbs of tablets to equal what one small bottle can do.

Not sure why but it goes on/off sale on Amazon all the time. I think because you could make meth out of the raw crystalline iodine in the jars or something.

If you manage to find some somewhere I'd suggest storing it in a sealed, dry container. I live in a humid environment and had a jar manage to stain the trunk of my car.

Also a bonus, in our nuclear water war future the iodine mixture you are using to purify your water will be better for your diet of radioactive scorpions and human bones.
