See this is what I meant when I said conservative versus "conservative". I don't really think it's a conservative view that anyone who has dyed hair is the worst. I don't even know why that would fall on a political spectrum. Also I cherish my grey hairs and am always sad when I see people with more glorious greys than myself.

I lived in SF for 8 years, yeah that's all made up I feel like the scientific intersection with classifying addiction as "a disease" gets a bit murky, but I also think so many people have a problem with that particular classification of addiction because there are vast amounts of stigma and ignorance attached to it. It's unlike any other disease in that regard. You can't yell at someone for having cancer. I mean you CAN, but it doesn't seem like a very nice thing to do. That being said, I've seen addicts and alcoholics lean way too far (IMO) into the disease model, basically throwing up their hands and saying "I have a disease, it's in my brain, I'm just defenseless, poor me" and strap their victimization to a model of classification that they, essentially, don't understand what it actually means. At that point, the addict is using it as an escape, or at the least a pass to play the victim yet again, and it drives me up the wall. I do believe that, culturally, our understanding of addiction has improved vastly in the last, say, 20 years, or even 10. It was mentioned in this thread before, but an approach of empathy is becoming more commonplace, bucking America's historically traditional "treatment" of punishment for what is perceived as some sort of moral failure. I'm looking forward to what advances we'll have in our understanding and treatment of addiction in the next decade.
