It's a tough thing, I imagine, because her accusation is the kind of thing that seems like it is certainly rape, and gives me serious anxiety to imagine or think about but is also probably not illegal- or at least not prosecutable- anywhere. The way we would deal with such an accusation in the west would be for a reckoning over social media and a lot of people bombing the guy's twitter account or whatever. Not really a serious consequence but it would be some sort of public catharsis for whatever that's worth and it helps that our elites think that they are facing serious abuse when it happens to them. It's hard for me, as an idiot, to know whether the party will take the accusation seriously, I get the impression that they will not but I'd like to be wrong. It seems that even if they did, though, the consequence would not be a social media cancelling. I think it's very difficult for people who imagine that as the only sort of consequences that elite sex pests can face to see a situation where the government is precluding a social media response, and have a hard time enunciating why that hits them so hard. The reason why is that they cannot imagine a world where the popular will can bring any consequences to bear against an elite beyond mean tweets, but that doesn't sound great, so their brain goes to some weird places trying to explain their alarm. For myself, if the party does not follow up on the accusation to any satisfaction, I can't help but wonder what peng shuai is left with. Social media callouts are a busy box, but I do kind of feel that they're better than nothing.
