Gave the case a clean down on the Commodore and thought it was time to take some photos of it: Old barrel battery was removed as it was starting to leak, replaced it with a better setup. Annoyances with this case is that it doesn't leave much room around the PS/2 port to plug mice into it. Probably gut the case one day and get a Dremel on it to give it a bit more clearance. Also the fact I can't just swap in another 486 motherboard means it is stuck as it is, but still a cool thing from the day.

That's not even a 486. It's a 486SLC, which was really just a slightly better 386.

That's even dumber than the y2k bug. At least the cobol programmers in the 60s and 70s were assuming that new software would be written in the next 30 years to replace theirs, which wouldn't be limited by number storage space. That was just a failure of imagination, not "make this only work for 5 years for no reason."

Given how janky 80s/90s DOS software was it was probably safer to keep compatibility with previous BIOS versions than it was to fix anything like that.

Cross Posting from Aliexpress Thread for those that were interested. Storytime everyone! Over six months ago a kind goon offered me an AV switch that looked pretty neato. We are goons separated by the Pacific but nevertheless the kind goon packed up the switch and send it off on an adventure. TODAY 5 months after shipping, it has finally arrived out of the blue (I was sure it was lost along the way and gave up on the idea) The trays are neat, left has CD slips and right has little trays and a remote control Inside was also the receipt from 2010! Business End: Thankyou random goon! I actually though this was my Automotive Insanity Secret Santa Gift until I saw the date on the connote. haha! EDIT: Guess what sits and fits... flavor.flv posted:There's a local community centre I volunteer at if you want to toss twenty bucks their way, they do good work and I know all the money goes where it's needed: Done! I've been trying to find some information for a long time on a really cool IBM PC my family had ages ago. It would have been around mid-90s, I believe it had a Cyrix chip in it. The neat thing was the form factor. It had a tower, but the faceplate was just blank. Instead there was a big chonkin great cable that connected the tower to a smaller desktop unit that contained the CD and floppy drives. It had an integrated monitor stand so your screen sat above the drive unit. The drive box also had a pop-up feature where you pushed a button on the box and the top swung open on cool slow-open hinges to reveal the drives. Does this ring a bell for anyone? Every now and then I try to google this thing, but I've never managed to find a picture or anything of it. Here's a poo poo paint sketch of it. The case and monitor and keyboard were all black, very kickin' rad for the 90s.

Yeah and the little popup for the drives had this soft close fancy mechanism. It definitely felt like a Very Fancy Computer. This guy digs through it a lot deeper. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eO_kceLHRTE Somehow WalMart still lists the scanner on their website, understandably "Out of Stock", but that's about what I remember paying for one. https://www.walmart.com/ip/IBM-01K1226-IBM-01K1226-0275-001-FLATBED-SCANNER-BLACK/131947271 Weird that it was all passing through an old ISA slot, didn't use PCI. I guess with whatever it was, a 4X CDROM it didn't matter. It had PS/2 ports, but the video was still a separate line. This was rihgt baout the time of Packard Bell's awkward attempts to "innovate" with their corner computers and crap. And it reminds me to curse IBM, yet again, for using those flathead screws. Have your nut driver? Life is good. Otherwise it's slotted screw hell.

So might not be entirely the right thread, but anyone have experience with HDMI to RGB(S) converters/scalers? Basically I have access to a (very nice) 80s Sony video monitor that can take RGBS inputs, and it would be neat to plug it into a Pi or similar and use it to watch standard-def content. As a bonus I'm now old enough that the flyback whine is barely audible anymore! I know there are options that convert HDMI to CVBS (i.e. composite) or perhaps S-Video, and there are also some options with a SCART output. CVBS isn't optimal for obvious reasons. In theory the SCART connector can carry RGBS video so I'd just make an adapter-cable, but I can't really find any specification for the cheap HDMI-SCART converters that actually says if they output RGB, or if they just put CVBS into a SCART connector. My guess is it's not RGB. The other option is luma/chroma component converters, but then I'd need a converter to RGB, and they probably won't be scaling to standard def so I'd also be running the UI at 576i50 or 480i60.

The Demoscene is a solid chunk of why I would never pay for a music streaming service, given that likely a plurality of the total artists I listen to wrote music that cannot possibly ever be available on something like Spotify. Also, there are lots of .MOD collections out there I am sure if you cannot find your collection. Is Stone Oakvalley still trying to archive all Demoscene songs ever written I wonder

If you like tracked music you should check out modizer on ios, it's incredibly slick and supports pretty much every format, including plain midi files and even game console formats like .vgz, .nsf and so on https://apps.apple.com/us/app/modizer/id393964792 But the thing that actually makes it great is the direct integration with the big module repositories online, so it's like a searchable streaming service for oldschool computer music, it has to be at least half a million tracks in there
