TONITE! we continue our nature documentary loose theming with the very creatively named "animal homes!" it's about structures that animals build to live in which is something i personally find fascinating. at the very least there will be lots of very cute baby animals!

Thanks to everybody who joined in for the big marathon, I had a blast!

And for those who missed it, This two-part documentary on cats hosted by Joanna Lumley was my favorite film of the night, and I am hereby nominating it for a Coupons & Deals Movie Nite Award, the hotly contested Best Narrator/Host award. Finally someone who might fill the melodious void left by Stacy Keach!!!

Yeah it was a very educational Nature Docs November. I learned that a full grown oak tree drinks upwards of 200 gallons of water a day! And the bottom of the sea remains, as we have long known, weird as all loving get-out.

Next month is Christmas movies! You can not escape it!!!

Here's the thing about Christmas movies. You can blame any number of social ills for them- commercialism, religious tyranny, western hegemony, the patriarchy, government mind control programs, they're all true! Christmas movies are movies at their absolute worst, their cheapest and schmaltziest, their lowest-effort and most manipulative and most sincerely god-awful, and the 20th century was one long death march of them. Every year they vomited all over mankind from movie screens and TV tubes like an indelible ooze that stained every surface and entombed every living thing for a full tenth of every calendar year, and if you complained you were ostracized. You should love the suffocating ooze, what's wrong with you??? Christmas movies are, at their best, goofy and gaudy, and at their worst really, profoundly terrible in a way no other movies are.

My estimate is, 5-10% of all movies are Christmas movies, depending a great deal on what your personal definition of a Christmas movie is. But even by the strictest standards, it's a ridiculous amount. Christmas movies are like the layer of chicken bones in the fossil record that mark the Anthropocene's start, except the stratified record they represent is 20th century American, consumerist, watered-down-Christian-identity culture. These examples are definitely related (there's some turkey bones in that geological layer too I bet).

So what do we do? Do we shun the tradition? Pick some other theme for December's movie nites? Just throw away 10% of the possible catalog of movies because it's a ring of toxic corniness that makes you want to barf model trains? Or, to the opposite extreme, would we entertain the horrifying thought, *shudder*, Christmas movies year-round?? Both suggestions are clearly madness.

December is Christmas Movie Month because Christmas culture is a suffocating ordeal constructed of every wrong impulse in society and we are powerless to stop it. Happy Holidays!

And yet its stink is on so many movies I can't live without! I refuse to part with legit great movies that just happen to take place at Christmas like Batman Returns, Brazil, and Tokyo Godfathers.
