The only me is the one which exists now. The me-that-was does not exist. The me-to-be does not exist. The me-that-will-be is not the same person I am now. Whether the changes are minor (as between me-now and me-yesterday), or major (as between me-now and me-at-15), it is not the same person. Whether my changes over time are due to new experiences, skills, equipment/augmentations (glasses, cochlear implants), replacements (synthetic flora, prosthetic limbs) matters only insofar as the changes are large or small. The parts of my body that make up me are constantly being replaced with new cells. Insofar as my cells could be gradually replaced with, I dunno biomemetic nanites or whatever, that might still be a me-to-come. Likewise if it was a matter of a full-conversion cyborg with brain in a synth body or something.

Fakeedit: I don't know how gradual it'd have to be to work out. That is my point, I think. How can I tell when I have not undergone the conversion? Why would one want to take that risk, unless one had little to lose?

But when there is no transfer except information, how can a robot be me in any meaningful way? A clone based on me, sure, and with the rights and responsibilities due to a person, but not me.
And that's where the crux is. For you "just" information is a meaningful distinction. Which is fine, just not a universal opinion.

Caustic Soda posted:

As implemented right now, synth ascension strongly implies to me that the change is all-at-once. If instead the change was gradual, on a per-pop basis or something, it might fit with my conception of the me-to-be. Perhasp something similar to the mixing that follows from xeno-compatibility or somesuch, though I get why people could find the hodge-podge of pops annoying.

From a societal perspective, assuming a robo-CS and meat-CS are the same person makes sense. From a game perspective, it is cool and good that the transition is fairly seamless or at least downside-free, rather than a reenactment of Total Annihilation or. But there is no way for the me-that-is to know whether ascension is a transferral or a suicide, as the Spiritualists assume.
That's all fair. This is one of those things where there is genuinely no "right" answer (absent proof of an immutable soul of course). I'm not trying to convince you your wrong, just that someone who would consider their post-transfer self a valid continuation is not being ideologically inconsistent. It is the correct answer for them.

Caustic Soda posted:

Speaking of Spiritualists, as far I can tell their opposition to synths in general is pure bigotry. If a being made of met or rocks can be a person, why not one of silicon or other metals? Sure, you can't have both a synth ascension and a psy ascension, but then that would imply those who don't go for psy ascension are soulless or powerleess sleepers a-la White Wolf Mage or some such.
Yeah and that's an entirely different thing and what I was originally talking about. We're at a point where every single Spiritualist consumers a metal man that uses first person pronouns obviously either an affront to nature or just faking it, but a literal soulless husk has some doctrinal flexibility.

Is that 2 minerals and 2 food for 2.5 consumer goods instead of 1:1 minerals:consumer goods? Yikes.

edit: its already on the wiki: 3 consumer goods and 2 trade value for 2 minerals and 2 food. Artisans are 6 minerals for 6 CGs, clerks are 4 trade value. Not sure what to think. Anglers are really good though, +8 food and 2 trade value.

I was excited purely for Anglers and doing an ocean start but this is not at all what I expected so I just refunded it and wont be bothering. I have limited time to play so I'm going to play something else. The way Anglers worked was not described well enough in the dev diaries so I'm a little unhappy that I was excited to try it out for some variety to my gameplay but instead its not what I thought it was.

Thats not my cup of tea at all and I expect it to be disappointing because the dragons wont scale well. I just loved the idea of having the high food output, turning food into alloys, and producing CGs at a lower cost without needing to invest as heavily in mining, but with it still having a mineral cost for no discernable reason, the lower-than-advertised output, being a specialist, and the Trade Value not scaling like mineral, food, or CG output does due to tech & buildings I heel turned hard on being interested. Like yeah my one farmer is producing more per worker but the extra base 2 food generated by the Angler(farmer) job goes straight into the CG upkeep of the Pearl Diver. I'm not investing a civic into just... slightly altering how my food and CG output is generated.

If you compare it to Warrior Culture (which has the added bonus of not needing to be taken at game-start), the unity and amenity base output both goes up AND it also outputs fleet capacity. Anglers isnt doing nearly that. Food produced goes up but it goes straight into spending 4 basic goods for 3 CGs and 2 TV, which as stated doesnt scale well into mid or late game.

I was waiting for these kinds of posts, real classy. I'm in a tough life situation right now and I dont have the luxury of a lot of free time so I'm choosy with what I play. I like the state Stellaris is in and was looking forward to some new content. Unfortunately I drew some bad conclusions about the DLC based on the small amount of info that was provided in a DD; the part I thought I would like is in fact bad. Sew me.

Does anyone have a link to the spreadsheet someone made when we first discussed the anglers civic possibly giving just 1 angler job? I remember people deciding it was still good, but I don't remember if we knew about the 2 mineral upkeep for divers back then.

I actually like Anglers despite the extra upkeep. It just flows (heh) into an additional consumer goods income you can use to upkeep early labs for.

I think it'd pair pretty well with Technocracy maybe?

I've been playing an ocean world origin megacorp with anglers and whatever the megacorp version of pleasure seekers is called, and it seems good. I dunno about trading my guaranteed habitables for an extra 6 size on my homeworld since I can't spam alloys well there. I'm hoping to find a different world I can turn into ocean and make bigger to pump alloys in.

Hey man, I just want to point out the reason people aren't responding well is because your point of view and rage at a $7 roleplaying mini-DLC this is like, deserving of a 3 or 4 in emotional turmoil. But it's at 9 for some reason. Dial it back a little, you got your refund.

The last patch was mostly the going back and fixing old bugs/updating old DLC one people had been asking for for awhile. Before that I think it added industrial districts and changed how job specialization buildings worked a bit (an alloy plant now increases the output of metallurgists but increases the mineral upkeep, essentially making every metallurgist work as 1.x metallurgists). Not a huge change but a welcome one.

if that's a 9 on emotional turmoil then people actually going through emotional turmoil in real life must rate a 50 on your scale

My initial thoughts on the pearl diver part of Anglers is that the job itself is inefficient on a per-pop basis so, when you fill it, it is for a marginal benefit (over being unemployed, because its early game and you don’t have the minerals to build another industrial district or research lab etc). The mineral upkeep was something they announced during the preview last month (it’s in the screenshot and the written text) and is definitely Not Ideal, but I guess they’re an alternative to clerks? I need to try it out, but I’m guessing they would pair well with something like barbaric despoilers and Necrophage; a combination that often ends up with a lot of pops that need jobs and very much do not want to be workers. I’m guessing that I’ll eventually disable pearl diver jobs on certain planets, but that’s true of several jobs so eh.

My weekly stellaris mp group is starting a fresh game on Wednesday and I think we’re all going with the Dragon origin to see if we can get our space Pokémon to fight. I’m excited.

hobbesmaster

The problem with using them as a pop "extra job" is that they're specialists and you'd want your overflow job to be workers.
