I've got some Xbox 360 controllers from Goodwill and one of the generic usb receivers and I'm ready to loving rock.

im curious what performance is like with this situation. I have a retropie / raspberry pi (3?) in my Arcade 1Up and almost everything works flawlessly in that as it is. Is there much advantage to moving up to a 4 or an HK1?

I think the only issues i have had are with certain emulators running MK 3 and trying to run Killer Instinct at full speed.

edit: just tried out mk3 and it runs fine. cant find killer instinct now.

I think for your setup as a dedicated arcade device there might not be much reason to upgrade, but I want console emulation and all that poo poo too. And for me, it's a $45 solution that allows me to free up a Pi 4 which can be repurposed or resold. I suppose there's an added bonus of being able to play Android games too, but I don't really do that very much.

PS1 most definitely, but I'm not counting on PS2 functionality. Should be able to do everything up to and through Dreamcast just fine, maybe some limited Saturn, too. The Hk1 Box isn't top of the line, but it can do a lot for the $45 price point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2nUAm2blzo if you're interested in learning more!

Also, if anybody who reads this is thinking about getting one, make sure to get this model and not the HK1 Box Max or Pro or whatever. Different, not as good chipsets on those.

Yeah, we're at the point where medium to high end android tv boxes of comparable price to a kitted out rasberry pi can match or exceed it, and the ones that can run emulation station have an interface comparable to retropie as well.

Note: the price of the high end beelink gt king has gone up a bunch due to demand/shortages
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIAGCMmUBK8

Most of the power of the NVIDIA shield at a fraction of the cost, and emulation station support
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cftyAq_J9g

And at the low end you have a bunch of pre-configured but poorly-configured S905 super console x clones/variants, but the low end ones on aliexpress are so cheap you're not really going to beat them by buying a bare S905X box off amazon + controllers and such, and due to the S905 chipset they'll run emulation station

This is an older video using desktop linux and older emulators, but it looks like it's powerful enough for everything up through most gamecube (not Wii), which is about where the Shield is
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nGo32nTsLM

As for cases, it doesn't appear to have many cases or nice looking ones, just plain black metal cases or cheap clear acrylic cases

Verdicts:

1) Everybody who reads this thread should consider getting a HK1 Box with 4gb of RAM. It can do everything short of Dreamcast extremely well and only costs $40ish. The next step up is like a Nvidia Shield Pro at $200ish. Honestly wish I'd ordered two. My plan to use thrifted Xbox 360 controllers and a generic USB receiver worked flawlessly. It's not the best on the market, but I'm pretty blown away by the quality for the price point.

2) PowKiddy RGB10-Max is a very, very good handheld. I still love my RG351V, but I can already tell you that the RGB10-Max is going to be a lot more pleasant to use for extended sessions. Part of me wishes I'd waited a little longer and ordered the Max-2, but the games I play on this don't use the triggers that much so ultimately I don't think that I will miss them.

I thought the generic 360 receivers had trouble with multiple Xbox controllers? I have an official receiver (the only way to get one back in the day was to buy it bundled with a controller) and it works fine with 2 controllers, so it's good to hear if even unofficial receivers work fine now. Gotta admit it has great compatibility, it works with any OS you can throw at it, I would only hope the new Xbox adapter could be as compatible but I doubt it. The main problem is 360 controllers are no longer dirt cheap and the ones with the good transforming d-pad are really high in price now.

HK1 Boxes might not be the cheapest S905X3 android boxes but if you can get them with 4GB of RAM for $40 that's not bad at all. I'd say the next step up in the AMLOGIC chipset family is the Beelink GT King/Pro with the S922X which used to offer near Shield level performance (but no Vulkan) for nearly half the price but it's gone up to around $150 recently. The real step up steal might be the NVIDIA Jetson Nano which finally has an emulation station build and is only $60 for the board (but you need a case too).

I'm running EmuElec primarily, and I really like that I could pull the SD card and boot into Android if I wanted to. Reminder to anybody interested: there are a lot of similar sounding product names for the HK1 Box, so look for the one with the Amlogic s905x3 chipset and 4gb of ram.

I’m kinda tempted to try to sell my 350M while it still has some value and pick up a RP2+ instead.

I have a 351P as my “main” device so the M ends up filling the “sharper pixels but less powerful” niche, so I end up rarely using it. The RP2+ has the same sharpness but looks like it would actually cover more systems and at a decent price point. The other upcoming devices seem to be jumping up the price to the point where I can’t really justify them as a hobby.
