It really isn't a bad sounding/playing bass, hopefully this'll help him progress in his playing.

Nice, seems like the best-case outcome. It's amazing how much difference it makes when an instrument has a decent setup.

I've got 3 basses and some considerably more expensive but my go to right now and the one I get the most compliments is my light green sub ray. It's a loving workhorse that does no wrong in my eyes. Dependable as gently caress.

I love me some tapes, specifically La Bella whites/coppers/golds. The black nylon formulation is fine but I like the white (technically clear translucent) nylon better personally.

Those are La Bella Bubby Gokus from NAMM 2019, sonically the same as whites but with *flair* from the silk under the nylon.

They are slippery and substantially lower tension than your standard rounds or flats, so they will feel noticeably different, but I really did it. Zero finger noise, slides are effortless, and it's really easy to put some grease on a note with a string wiggle. They last a stupid long time too, I usually swap them every two to four years. They'll be pretty bright (not rounds bright tho) for a couple weeks, settling into a more mellow state where they will remain for the next couple years.

If you think you'll be alright with low tension, do it.

A sound like this (timestamped):

Is that just like 50 db of compression on the front end and god's own skills on muting?

Same thing with this thing that's been flying around:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRT_V_3rK3I

It seems like you could only do this with a ridiculous amount of comp up front as well as the best 0.1mm-accurate setup on the straightest neck in the world to make it sound like that.

I'm not pretending to think I can ever do that, but, school me - how do they do it?

I have a set that came on a used bass a few years ago. I put them on another bass and they're probably ten years old by now. Tapes are great. The high end is still there, just muted, and never clattery or clanky. Sounds good with chorus on it if you're into that sort of poo poo, more subtle than it would be with rounds.

I have some tapes on my Gretsch bass and it feels like they sound like really rubbery flatwounds on the low end but still get a lot of high end on the upper strings or if you play really attack-y. Versatile, I guess??? They sound real good doing slides and they feel like big udon noodles

Short answer: a bit of compression, a decent setup, and a metric shitload of practice. No other way around it, gotta put in the time and develop good consistent technique. Their good technique is hands down the most important part of the result.

So I traded in my skinny neck'd Ibanez toward a nicer skinny neck'd Ibanez and I've been playing my Yamaha in the meantime, my fretting hand starts to hurt after maybe half hour or so, sort of cramping I guess, to the point where fretting becomes a chore. Is this normal playing with this chunkier neck profile that I'm not really used to? Will it go away with time like any muscle ache after working out said muscle, or should I refrain from playing as to not injure my hand? It's mostly the webbing between thumb and index finger that starts to hurt, not necessarily my actual fretting fingers.

Ugh, I really hope the new one shows up sooner than anticipated.

Are you fretting properly, right up next to the frets, almost right on top?

Frozen Pizza Party
Dec 13, 2005

So far as I can tell, I don't think anything has changed with fingering. Usually when that happens I'm greeted with a not great sounding note and some buzz. The action is also noticeably higher on this than the old one, the old one also had Rotosound tapes, this one has standard D'addario roundwounds.

Could be the action. Set it up how you like and see if pain persists.

Gorgar

Higher action sounds like the culprit, but rounds require more pressure than tapes, I've found, to get a good clear tone out of them.

Absolutely. If you want to play at that level, you must be practicing multiple hours per day. There is no shortcut.

That's the plan, I've got a set of tapes for it anyhow so I'll do the full setup when I swap those out. I also called Sam Ash to bug about the new bass even though they said June 2022, it updated to December 6th of this year!

Don't post in here very much but just wanted to talk about my Sweetwater/Ibanez fiasco that has been ongoing the past year.

January: I put in a preorder on the Ibanez SR305E in Sky Veil Matte, waited 6 months and was told not to expect it this year (I mean supply chain issues are hitting every industry)

June: Swap to an Ibanez Mezzo SRMD205, was a little bit skeptical, it's a shorter scale on a 5 string but holy gently caress the bang for the buck on this bass was amazing, it played like a dream.

End of October: Until the Jazz pick up shits the bed, god this was disappointing but I reach out to Sweetwater and they're like "No problem let's send you a box and shipping label and get that taken care of".....5 days later "Hey Photex.....was there damage to the headstock before you shipped it out? It was brand new? oh uh....this is substantial and we can't send this back to you even after a repair so we will send you a new one."

November: "Hey Photex this bass is out of stock till December, we can refund you or you can wait" I decide to wait

December: "Hey Photex, Ibanez discontinued that line, there will be no more shipping, also every 5 string bass in that price range is out of stock till mid 2022"

So now i'm waiting on a 4 String Squier Contemporary Jazz Bass - Ocean Blue Metallic.

tl;dr: Supply chain issues suck for every drat industry, gently caress fedex that bass was pristine and I literally pack and freight ship stuff for a living some rear end in a top hat threw it off the back of the truck. Sweetwater's communication for such a large company is top notch and they tried their best to make me happy.

So I did a thing tonight...

Went by a Music-Go-Round near the house to kill some time and look around at what people are off-loading before the holidays to get some extra cash and found this gem:

As best as I can date it, it's a 1973 Epiphone EA-260, made in Japan. I don't necessarily have a need for a short-scale hollowbody, but I sure didn't let that stop me. It's so round and warm, just needs some good flats on it. Also needs the solder-joints cleaned up, and that I'm dreading... Working on wiring on a hollowbody is annoying af.

buy really nice flats, since you will never change them. Pyramids, La Bellas, or TIs. the rotos are fine, but if you're making the investment in flats you want something special.

I’ve been considering a short scale for years now…

I have big hands and a great stretch too, always play one finger per fret etc. 34” just seems too much at times.

Sometimes I think “but kilometers, what if the tone isn’t right or it’s not great for recording” and then paul mccartney appears and beats the poo poo out of me and then takes my hand and says “it’s okay son, accept the short scale”.

I think he used a full scale on some albums though.

For sure gonna take it along for the next country gig I play though!

I need to get in touch with Novak about either rewinding the pups or seeing what he has that I can drop right in.
