Yeah I wonder if there's some tuning specific to those fights that's different. One of those extortion ambushes I barely survived and actually used a dampener for, but it paid off because I got a Large Glory Crystal and a Balm out of it...

Missed 20+ pages of stuff because I was casually getting my butthole rocked by hard mode. Wasn't avoiding spoilers, just casually hunting mimans and getting my team 2-shot by encounters 4 levels below me when I didn't get first action priority.

Hopefully I'm at the start of the second area--I'll find out once everyone's done talking. Was actually starting to fret over the boss I just tangoed with because I couldn't grind anymore, and that boss just had more HP than I had demons, mana, and shield items. And then it just ended and people started to talk a ton and loredump.

SMT V has a disappointingly small amount of Jacks. No Jack the Ripper, no Demonee-ho, no Lucefrost, no Frost Five…

I suppose I should be happy that King and Black Frost are there, but still

I just hit level 20 and am starting to wonder about my attribute points. Does it matter where I put them? Should I be optimizing my build? I've just kind of been putting them wherever, but mostly in Magic. Is there a respec?

I'm on Casual since this is my first SMT game, but am going to bump the difficulty up since I just beat the second boss.

You don't have to be super careful, but it'll make your life easier if you focus on either magic or strength. Just in terms of picking what skills to learn, you have such limited space.

Actual real talk though a Support MC is probably more viable than ever in this game because you can make demons incredibly powerful just through essences and stuff. Plus there's just a lot of demons that are fantastic out of the box on their own merits.

I said upthread I missed the demon whisper system compared to this essence stuff and since then I've flipped completely around. The customization options for demons/Nabohino are loving insane and I love it.

I just beat the area 2 werewolf miniboss with an entirely unfused party. That specific boss has like direct counters in the area around him

Man, yeah I am at the dungeon at the end of area 3 and I am just churning through demons, folks aren't even staying in my party more than one save point lol

I have fused away two of the so-called "Power Trio", Idun is sticking around though, Golden Apple has just been such a clutch move

You know, the variable item limits (you can have 10 Chakra Pots, 5 Bead Chains, etc. in this game to give an example) does a number on my hoarding instincts. Because, while I can't recall if this started in original SJ, it was in Redux so maybe it started in IV. It's definitely in IVA and I remember so many boss fights ending with Chakra pots as items won...but I had max Chakra Pots so I never got it. I passed up on many chests because they had items I was full on.

I was thinking during those last very stressful boss fights that "you know, I can only hold 5 Somas.. I have 3 Somas. I'll probably get more and if I do, they'll just vanish so why not use one now and free up space." I didn't but it definitely makes me more willing to use such items knowing these very small limits compared to FF's "you can hold 99 of anything."

I think Star Ocean 3 was the first game I played with this gameplay gimmick. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I'm not sure if it really adds to difficulty or strategy.

Not to mention a fused Black Frost probably has a better skill set than the quest one. And Dionysius has some surprising utility with the always crit atack and Sexy Dance.

Also just beat the Akihabara boss who was kiiind of a spike in level so I had to level 1-2 times and in the process got an Idunn with no weaknesses, Heal Pleroma and Boon Boost. Enjoying the Luster Candy that lasts forever :unsmigghh:

I've been steering down this path (support MC) but I think I flubbed it a bit by taking my skills mostly from the Aogami essences, so everything my MC can cast costs at least 20MP (I just hit my early 20s with most demons, so that's a lot!)

However it's fine, with elemental shards always available for purchase, I haven't had to waste too many turns with just a plain attack or passing. You do feel the cost playing this way, though, with each shard costing 200 macca. The short trip through the transition between areas 1 & 2 probably just cost me around 2500 macca.

Absolutely not. Black Frost had got that Sigma male grindset, your network is your networth, and I ain't letting a beta like Dionysus bring that down.

I do have a question, does the Neutral route have the same penalties as Law/Chaos if you go in with a different alignment? Cause I'm not sure of mine but I feel I've been leaning Law because I tend to go with the "protect humans" options. Also sided with Asparas, Principality and Dionysius (even if he's Chaos aligned his side is pretty Law).

Leanan Sidhe literally claims your soul in exchange for graciously allowing you to perform labor, she's the most capitalist of any of them.

The Neutral route does not penalize you but plain just doesn't offer a unique miracle or a version of the sidequest with the penalty. Your only reward is knowing you picked the correct side.

During the segment in the current dungeon, when you gotta dodge two enemies on opposite ends of a hallway running at you, I confused the game because the one tried to attack me and fell down off the level he's programmed to be on. When the game teleported him back to his normal spot, he and the other guy wee now on the same end of the hallway and just ran slowly in one direction. Thought that was decently amusing. I'm gaming the game now.

I gotta say, if SMTV was more dungeons like this, I'd like it a lot more. Well, the gameplay part of it. I'm trying to withhold my thoughts on the story till I get an ending because an ending can really make a game. The first Nier would be pretty below average without Ending D but that ending catapults the game into unforgettable. So while I have a lot of criticisms of SMTV's writing, a good ending could help remedy some of that.

I don't have much patience for JRPGs these days but I liked P4G. If I were to pick only one SMT to play, what's the better game between Nocturne HD and V? I'm already leaning heavily towards Nocturne because it's on sale and on Steam.
