Girlfriend might have coronavirus but her test is at the national show center.

That's an hour by bus, if people are sick you should not be directing them to spend 2 hours on public transport.

I'd drive and collect her but the last time I visited her a prick of a guard seized my car for driving unaccompanied with no L plates.

She absolutely shouldn't be using public transport if she thinks she has it. If she has symptoms and or a positive antigen you'd nearly be as well just treating it like she has it and staying cocooned for two weeks. If she absolutely has to get the test she could wrap up, double mask and bring lots of sanitizer and clean before and after she touches anything.

Also why are you driving as a learner with no L plates? Did you get stopped at a checkpoint or something? I'd say it was lovely luck and the chance of it happening again are slim but you really shouldn't be driving on your own if you're only learning to drive.

I drove in my youth when it was known as a provisional license and there wasn't the current requirements to have an accompanied driver. Unfortunately I never got my full back then. I started driving again not long before the new stricter laws came in and have just been stuck cause of the long waiting lists for the full test.

I think it's a bit silly as a grown man who pays a fortune in insurance I'm meant to just leave my car sitting up while I wait for a test that never seems to come.

There's been times I've been tempted to, especially when they went back to 100% capacity and students going back to school. But I've got a test in December and hopefully be able to pass it this time. Disposable masks and glasses do not make a good combo while doing the driving test, even when you use stuff to prevent them from fogging up.

Think they'll restart the PUP? doubt it will ever be as high as it was before. They'll just put everyone on the basic jobseekers rate.

Nah, theres both a growing awareness of the financial cost of lockdowns and also too much pressure from business owners to get rid of it. They don't want people out of work being even vaguely financially secure because it means they can choose not to work, or pick and choose between available minimum wage jobs. That puts too much power in the hands of the workers.

They're going to extend/increase business side supports instead - the TWSS etc. Thats up at cabinet today supposedly. That achieves something similar but keeps all the power in the business owners hands.

I was just looking back at the number of cases in primary/secondary thing time last year (from the FB group) and the difference this is staggering

early december 2020

Last two weeks

Before delta+vaccines, they were roughly the same, now the case numbers in the unvaccinated, unmasked primary kids are well over 6 times that of the secondary school students. Given that the very young kids are more likely to be asymptomatic, the ratio is probably even higher.

They should do it next Friday so I can play Final Fantasy XIV for a month like I very clearly deserve.

On a more serious note its nuts that "we've" managed to some how gently caress up December again. I think a lot more people would have been comfortable with a circuit breaker lockdown in November, maybe into December a bit if it meant having Christmas for sure this time.

That's assuming they dont just put the head down and try to tough it out. Which is all fine and good until you run out of hospital beds

They left the reopening too late to do that unfortunately. If we'd reopened fully in July like in England, or August/September like in the rest of Europe, there would have been some ability to lockdown in November. But when we only opened up on October 22nd, it didn't give the government that option. Their whole argument to defend why we were opening up so late was so that we wouldn't have to lock down again. There "would be no roll back" in Martin's own words. Which meant they couldn't immediately lockdown again within 2 weeks without admitting they were completely wrong with their timing.

The fact that we reopened literally right as winter weather was driving all socialising indoors, and flu season was starting, was incredibly predictably bad timing. We could have reopened in summer, when hospital usage was low and schools were out, and built up our natural immunity. But instead we delayed as long as possible to reopen and we're now facing into a winter with one of the lowest natural immunity levels in Europe. And we now know thats even more important than vaccine uptake levels.

I get the impression from friends, family and random people I get chatting to that the appetite for another lockdown is non existent.
Most people say they feel like they've done enough. I think there's a good chance there will be one and that compliance levels with it will be terrible.

Couple friends of mine organised a surprise birthday party for one of the friend group for last Saturday. Because the woman the party was for is not exactly a social butterfly the lads decided we'd all just sit in the apartment of a guy who lives in Cork City Centre and watch a bunch of bad movies for a few hours. His living room is tiny with very little room to move around because one full half of the living room is just a wall of unwashed clothes, empty Heinekin cans and assorted bric-a-brac from charity shops thrown on an antique kitchen table (he isn't a goon, but in his heart he should be). So...one two-seater couch, two kitchen chairs and an armchair, all huddled together in front of a laptop on a low table. All seats occupied, all unmasked.

It's also worth mentioning that the woman the party was for has immediate family members in her household that work in an elderly care home.

I got cold feet a couple hours before the party and backed out.

Sunday, one of the guys messaged me saying I made the right choice: one of the other people at the party (who lives in the lovely apartment where the party was hosted) was waiting on the results of a PCR test he'd taken that morning and didn't tell anyone there until Sunday morning. He sat within inches of people watching movies with them for hours and didn't say a word about it. Understandably, everyone lost their minds.

Monday, the test comes back positive. Nobody's talking to one another and the guy who hosted the party is profusely apologising to anyone who'll listen because he also knew his flatmate was waiting on test results but didn't say anything because he didn't want to be a party-pooper.

Hope its not where I am living cork city centre.

And sounds like the fuckwit who is suspected to have brought covid to my home town back in Tyrone.
He was a student staying up in the Holylands (student area) in Belfast, his house mates got covid positive test results, so he decided to go home to quarantine with mammy and daddy.
Quarantine didn't stop the fucker going to GAA training that same week he came home, half the loving team got it from him and that spread it to the rest of the town.

Only two contestants left! Here is Doom's chance for revenge...

Do people who do that suffer any form of social punishment over it?
Like do they get made outcasts from their town afterwards?
Do they get blamed for people who lose loved ones to Covid due to their outbreak? Or is it spoken of only behind their back?

Not sure in this case but don't think so.
Its not proven he was the first one, just the first story that went around about it.
The fact that the GAA team were the eye of the spread is giving it credence.

Though there is a rabid anti-vaxxer in the town, who often tried to rip off the masks of other people as he was passing in the street.
He lives with his sister, sister then got covid so bad she was in ICU for a short time, he kept claiming she was faking it, and he was banned from most shops for not wearing a mask after.
He went on a one man rampage one night, and was politely 'told' to stop it with a light kicking.

The important point is that you whip up a posse of the second team football players, not just go off cock-handed.

Supposedly there was a priest that used to do that for domestic abusers around here, decades ago. He couldn't advocate divorce but he could advocate twelve 22 year olds telling a fucker to bollocks off or cop himself on or the slaps he'd be getting would be worse again.

Is Martin going to start on about a meaningful Christmas again. Get you meaningful shopping and pints in before we lockdown so you can't actually visit family on the day.

And I wish someone would throw back varadkars comments about zero in his face. Earlier this year when opposition wanted stricter travel so we weren't putting all our hope in vaccines, he said zero COVID would keep us locked down until September. It's loving November we just came out of lockdown and look to be going back in.

Actually the media holding people account in general for what they say would be nice. The amount of journalists and twitter graph bros who've declared FG have defeated COVID in the last 2 years, if I had a euro every time they've been wrong I'd be able buy a PS5 now.

There's one particular twitter graph bro whose been on TV even as an independent economist saying how great FG are doing. It's never mentioned he was general secretary of the YFG national executive and campaigns for them to this day.

The government is desperately trying to close down things like nightclubs and pantos without actually legally closing them, to avoid bringing back the PUP. Its pretty sickening.

Government warnings like that will cause huge numbers of people to cancel their tickets, and destroy businesses/jobs/lives of people in the industry. The least the government could do is offer financial support to the people involved if they're going to make announcements telling customers not to go.
