Buglord
I'm likewise curious how a virus which is known to cause blood clots and lasting cardiovascular issues can't be the cause of soccer dudes dying, while a vaccine has to be.

And kids are not basically immune to covid. They spread it just fine. And while they almost always have mild symptoms, there's been enough reinfections that "lifelong immunity" is clearly some kind of fb mommy-group collective delusion.

Myocarditis was looked at during the US approval process. Of the cases investigated, none were caused by the vaccine.

The picture on paper potentially is very nasty indeed - possibly high transmittable, partial immune escape, but we don't have that much IRL analysis to draw from.

The latter is especially worrisome IMHO, because it increases the chances that highly transmissible, highly evasive variants are within the realistic theoretical possiblities.

I was trying to find out about the sports thing and found this channel dedicated to cataloguing cardiac arrest in sports articles. Hope this helps.

Just at a glance they're including Sergio Aguero (previously-diagnosed arrhythmia, walked off the pitch) and John Fleck (grand mal seizure, discharged from hospital the next day) and a bunch of middle-aged and older amateurs, as well as people just *watching* games, in their "Herzstillstände im Sport" so I'm perhaps a little sceptical.

Also "Herzstillstände" sounds like something an English person would make up to try and sound like a German word.

I'm optimistic as the next person, but what did countries think banning travellers from ONE specific country is going to do to stop a spread. It's not like they're shut off from other ways out of the country. What a pointless decision.

We'll get better date about severity and ability to evade vaccines soon enough. Take it seriously, but don't panic until we know a little more about it.

I like to think that page exists more because it's some german guys fetish than anything to do with the vaccine. Even if all the cases were legit it doesn't prove anything because all it's showing is some athletes have heart problems during performance, which I assume was also the case before covid.

The logo of a heart overlayed with a syringe (filled with scary green liquid) suggests otherwise.

watch moderna and pfizer come out with boosters that take care of this variant by the end of the month, then watch FDA/CDC take 9 months to approve them, while global formaldehyde supplies begin to run low from all the embalmings

This is a real misunderstanding of how the FDA process works. Like you do realize they aren't the ones running the studies and it's up to the companies to actually send them something to approve right?

Hell it's how the process works everywhere. It's not like Europe or Canada were vaccinating people for months while the FDA was waiting around for vague reasons.

If we need to wait for full phase 3 efficacy trials for every tweak for a new variant, then we'll be two steps behind the virus forever.

Which won't be the case. They already changed the guidance to say variant vaccines can follow a process similar to yearly flu vaccines like nine months ago.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/22/covid-vaccine-fda-says-shots-that-target-new-variants-wont-need-large-clinical-trials-to-win-approval.html

There still needs to be some trial to show the variant vaccine has a similar immune response and similar safety profile and whatnot but it's not the full trial.

My understanding is yeah, basically. Pfizer was studying a Delta booster but if a third shot of the OG vaccine provides a close enough protection then there's really no point in disrupting production to switch everything over to the variant booster.

BioNTech will take two weeks to assess vaccine against latest Covid variant
Hannah Kuchler

BioNTech will know in two weeks whether the vaccine it developed with Pfizer will work against the new B.1.1.529 variant of Covid that has emerged in southern Africa.

The German company says it is testing the vaccine against the strain in the lab. It said the variant “differs significantly from previously observed variants” because of additional mutations on the spike protein, which vaccines target.

“Pfizer and BioNTech have taken actions months ago to be able to adapt the mRNA vaccine within six weeks and ship initial batches within 100 days in the event of an escape variant,” the company said.

“To that end, the companies have begun clinical trials with variant-specific vaccines (alpha and delta) to collect safety and tolerability data that can be provided to regulators.”

Shares in BioNTech climbed 7.2 per cent to $326.56 in pre-market trading, while partner Pfizer added 5.6 per cent to $53.75.

It's silly to try and estimate when a hypothetical new vaccine might be available within a few days of the variant being discovered.

Even without regulatory hurdles, I would be shocked to see any new (mass-produced) vaccine by spring 2022 .
