Kaubocks posted:deep water and caves are terrifying. i always read these kinds of threads when they come up. this poo poo is fascinating. You should get your hands on a copy of Shadow Divers. It's about some guys doing record breaking deep dives inside a sunken submarine. Imagine cave diving, but there's way more stuff to get tangled up in, there are strict time limits, and they're completely wasted because of the nitrogen narcosis. It's a great read if you're into reading terrifying diving stories.

There's a passage in Cryptonomicon where the main character is talking about preparing a dive plan to visit a wrecked sub about 150m deep, like "you need all of this specialised training and charts and current pattern forecasts and advanced textbooks on human physiology to come up with a bad plan that will merely kill you and all your friends".

My coworker was a dive boat captain and dive master and he talked about doing some deep cave dives. He brought 4 tanks of tri mix and I think he had 2 more stashed away at the deco stops. Literally hundreds of pounds of tanks to stay alive down there. Don’t go do it with your dinky little rented setup from Captain Barts Rum Reef Fuckers where a bunch of tourists cannonball directly into coral reefs.

Yeah these things only "turn up" in South Africa because of how much that country has invested in infectious disease management and tracking, because of how bad AIDS and tuberculosis have been in that country.

Frank Frank posted:That reminds me of the time a football fan got Myles Garrett, a 6’4” 272 lb NFL defensive end/sheet of pure muscle - to pose for a picture after a game and punched him in the face. Garrett mostly seemed confused and said something like “hey next time put your weight into it and I might feel it” and somehow resisted tearing the man in half like a phone book/drinking the goo inside. That wasn't even the worst public humiliation he had that week. He plays for the Browns.

Susie Dent’s Twitter is always a good read because her entire schtick, as a person well know in the UK for reading a dictionary on a Quiz Show, is posting an obscure word every day that is related to topical events. And EVERY TIME she does it her replies are full of dimwits saying “Ha! Ha! How funny you posted this today because it could apply to X !!1!1!!1”. Where X is the precise reason she has chosen the word
