What. The list.

From 1927-1947, I count

Comedies 2
Musical comedies 1, 2 if you count the biopic The Great Ziegfeld
Westerns 1
Prestige drama 9
War movies 2
Action movies Maaaybe Mutiny on the Bounty? Otherwise none
Mysteries 1 Rebecca

Whatever the hell Going My Way is

The Great Ziegfeld absolutely counts as a musical. The production numbers in that are huuuuuge. Going My Way is just schlock starring Bing Crosby and I would count it as a musical comedy.

The 1931 Cimarron is most definitely an action movie. I would argue that Gone With the Wind is primarily an action movie, given how much of it is big set pieces like the burning of Atlanta and Scarlett racing her wagon through the streets and whatnot. I would also argue that Wings and All Quiet on the Western Front are action movies, because war movies and Westerns were the action movies before they invented superheroes.

But I will give you The Lost Weekend, The Life of Emile Zola, How Green Was My Valley, and Mrs. Miniver as more in the line of today's Oscar-bait prestige dramas. I would not count The Best Years of Our Lives in that category, as it was public psychotherapy after World War II and is also an incredible movie deserving all the Oscars now and forever.

The earliest complaining about how "Oscars only go to boring prestige movies" that I am aware of was around the Best Picture win for Marty in 1954, but I bet if I looked, I could find people complaining along those lines about The Life of Emile Zola or How Green Was My Valley.

I'm pretty sure the main character in the new Muppet movies is a Muppet born to two human parents, in his case he's a white Muppet. Presumably two Asian humans could also have a Muppet kid. So this is straight up canon and has been for years.

:wrong: Most of the screen time in GWTW is Scarlett. Sometimes she is in front of the burning of Atlanta, or a big ol' field of dying soldiers, but there aren't that many action sequences compared to the large amount of melodrama. There's having action sequences versus being an action movie. An arbitrary movie of War and Peace isn't an action movie, either.

quote:

I would also argue that Wings and All Quiet on the Western Front are action movies, because war movies and Westerns were the action movies before they invented superheroes.
War movies in general can be action movies, and Wings certainly is, but All Quiet is "omg war sucks", not "look at this exciting battle!"

I think I may not be using the same categories as you? I use "prestige movie" as "movie made for a highbrow audience, or to impress the public about how highbrow it is." BYOTL is a wonderful movie, but it's definitely intended to be An Important History Of Our Times. It just happens to be a good one.

My favorite bit of gone with the wind is when Scarlett is poor but proud, so she makes a dress out of curtains to impress Rhett, and it's a really fancy, closely tailored dress, but afterwards she puts the same curtains back up.

I think, and I am talking out of my hat, that in the last half of the 20th century it was much easier to get away with saying you prioritized fun over high culture. In the '30s, if you wanted to be a serious person (TM) you had to adhere to the general belief that there was a high culture, and that it was to be aspired to.

My favorite bit is when the movie portrays the fuckin' loser confederate soldiers getting drunk and banding together to terrorize black men as just a vigilante "group". Meanwhile the book is like "Lol yeah they're in this cute new thing called the Klan."

Or the scene where Rhett is like "I should just crush your loving skull right now" and this is apparently sexy and good.

(Don't get me wrong, I love that book.....as a historical horror novel, not as a romantic story about 'the good old days'.)

Don't get me wrong, I loathe GWTW, for the shameless romanticising of the confederacy as anything but a fight to keep slavery legal. And for how all the black characters were either super supportive of their 'masters' or too stupid to be left to look after themselves. It's a horrible film.

Gone With the Wind is (or at least recently was) wildly popular in China. That's why Vivian is such a popular English name for Chinese women.

It's just wild to me that white WOMEN read that book and go "The good ol' days :allears:" because life seemed like it loving sucked rear end even for a female member of a slave-owning family. (The whole "Miss to Mrs, property of your dad to property of your husband" thing is so loving stark in that book.)

I know, I know, the answer is "I don't mind not having rights if it means racial minorities have even less". :smith:

(Sorry if this comes across as 'WELL WHITE WOMEN HAD IT BAD TOO BACK THEN!!!!", it's just hosed up that the main audience for that book would be treated like poo poo during those days.)

Waaaaaiiiitt a sec, I'm not sure we ever see Gary and Walter's parents, it's possible that one of them is a Muppet. Could a Muppet mother give birth to a human child? Would a human child born to Muppet parents share physical attributes with them? Like is Gary's father a Muppet that looks like Jason Segel?
