The shittiest part is that centrists always have two options for coalitions, going with either the left or the right. Usually they do exactly what just happened in Sweden, but over the course of more than 7 hours: government supported by "their side", legislation across the middle. On the other hand, the leftists (and the righties) only have one option (the socdems) if they want to do anything. Which means the socdems have options rhyme the left doesn't, which means they get to decide. See how Ø is much bigger than S in Copenhagen, but S still gets the big boy mayor title. Which kinda reminds me, I'm looking forward to DF melting down over failing at local elections. Hopefully we get at least 3 new racist parties to split the vote, and possibly a pro-welfare populist party even? Or I guess just Martin Henriksen in charge, or Messerschmidt.

C, V and MP have all confirmed they're still OK with Andersson as prime minister, so it seems like this whole circus will just lead to her getting elected again next week, although with with the right-wing budget and without the MP cabinet members (which doesn't really matter, they didn't have any of the important minister posts). e: as a clarification, the prime minister election is a bit weird in that it's "backwards" - to get elected, you don't need a majority in favor, you just need to not have an absolute majority against you. That is, the speaker of the riksdag motions to elect a prime minister candidate, and the motion passes unless more than half of the chamber votes no (so an absolute majority - you need 175 votes to block the motion). In this case if Andersson is up for election again MP, V, and C would be abstaining and KD, SD and M would be voting no, but they don't have more than 50% of the seats on their own so they can't block her. MP, S, V and C together though have enough votes to block Kristersson as a candidate, and I don't see any other possibilities right now. Yeah she’ll get the position back, but she’ll have a (in theory) weakened government and saddled with a budget made by the opposition. It will be very hard for S to get any complicated deal through the ringer with C being the anti-V maniacs they are. Next year is election year so that's all that's gonna happen next year: C or V (or maybe MP) stonewall anything S wants to do because someone they don't like might like it, the right will make smug comments and throw all the money to plaster “LESS CRIME” voting slogans everywhere, and as soon as Kristersson gets elected PM next year, marknadshyror will suddenly be a thing again because M has had a long time of not loving over poor people they have to make up on.

The Danish right wing, including S, is just the worst. Roughly 10% of Danish adults can't vote, many due to not being citizens. Citizenship is not automatically conferred if you're born here, so many people born and raised in Denmark aren't citizens. In order to become a citizen, you have to complete a multiple choice test that tests crucial knowledge, like random historical dates, or factoids about the royals. If you fail that test, or have been sentenced to any kind of jailtime or large fine, you get to plead your case to the "Indfødsretsudvalg", which is a small council of politicians who will decide whether you can acquire citizenship. This deliberation is done in secret. Here are quotes from a couple of the members of that council. Mette Thiesen posted:(commenting on a guy who was in a fight in the early nineties, and still can't get citizenship because of it) Vi har den holdning, at udlændinge skal udvises konsekvent og efter første dom If you have received a sentence, even if it expires on your criminal record, you will still need to go to this council. Naturally, S doesn't see anything wrong with this. They love that people have to individually go hat in hand to this council, rather than letting criminal records expire at some point. I'm so happy we have a left-wing government.

You're deluding yourself if you think the rest of the parliamentary left are much different. SF voted for ghetto apartheid laws. EL voted with DF to further restrict where and for how long accompanying spouses can work, massively expand control measures and make Danish bank accounts mandatory, something that can be extremely difficult to obtain for a foreigner.

Kinda difficult to do anything if the victims don't dare speak out

McCloud posted:So SVT has a couple of articles up about abusive honor culture, and some of these cases are genuinely chilling In Denmark, the solution would obviously be more racism, since this exclusively happens because of Islam... But ignoring that, I'm guessing a part of the problem, besides the obvious psychological issues, is that it's economically difficult to leave your family. You have no chance of getting an apartment as a young person without either connections (through your parents...), being born rich (lmao) or insane luck, unless you have a job, which your parents probably wouldn't allow you to have. And it's even harder if you want to go somewhere new, which would be recommended. Add to that that you're social network is probably not good either, so you probably don't have anywhere to go. In other words, the solution is more socialism... Also it probably wouldn't hurt if the parents were actually included in mainstream society instead of being otherized at every turn. I bet there's a fair amount of cargo culting social structures that don't make sense in a Scandinavian context, but which the parents didn't fully understand in their original context. Apologies if I have been poisoned by Danish racism and assume that this is related to middle eastern immigrants when it's not. I'm honestly not sure, but if I am, please call me out so I can stop.

Honour culture is more unique, but conservative parents abusing their children with the implicit support of their community is not in itself novel to scandinavian society. Anywhere social reputation is in high regard, the imagined need to control follows. Problems helping are also the same as with any children being abused by their parents. Typically along the lines of: A: Children feel shame for being abused and internalize the blame B: Children don't want to lose their entire life as they know it C: Children don't want to rat out their parents Which is why typically children only signal when they fear for their lives. Or as with forced marriages, getting kidnapped. In primary education a lot is being done to normalize the idea that none of this is normal at very early ages, to ease barriers to signaling. The problem is that our social welfare institutions are cut to the bone all across the country, which means signals fail to reach their destination and ways out aren't offered in time. The ways out also aren't as frictionless as they need to be, and similarly to adult abuse police do not prioritize policing abusers is as much as they should.

Yes if you honestly want to stop abusive honour culture of all kinds, give more resources to pre-schools and schools to make sure that they have more staff, more educated staff, and that they can both teach against and recognize such behaviour. And this applies just as much to any Iraqi parents sending off their kids to be married during Summer break as it does to the bible belt parents abusing their trans kids.

they're publishing some downright astonishing numbers that shows a plane that costs literally twice as much money per aircraft to buy and significantly more to operate as being cheaper, so yeah either they got scammed by lockmart or it's the usual bribery that you always see in military procurement, or both. the operational costs per aircraft per year they're counting on are about half of what the USAF is paying for their aircraft, for some reason. but operational cost overruns a couple years down the line is no big deal, it's not like you can un-purchase the plane e: for reference the total cost to the swedish government for the entire gripen E program, that is all the research and development going all the way back to the start, and the cost of purchasing 60 aircraft, works out to about the same cost per aircraft (~$70M) as the current marginal cost of buying new F-35's off the existing production line disregarding the hundreds of billions spent on development hell. but still you see people on twitter going on about how gripen E is "risky" because it's "still in development" or whatever nonsense. Oh wait hold on, it might not even be bribery or a scam but rather just budgetary stupidity. They set the number of aircraft and the total budget well beforehand (64 aircraft/10 billion euro), so this might very well be a case of having to spend all of the allocated funds or lose them. Saab even had room to include two AEW&C aircraft as part of the offer.
