I see it as a symptom of his abusive "blanket training". He has been trained to stand still, smile, don't make a fuss, stand up straight, do what you're told, look happy, don't whine, shut up, stop fidgeting, etc. for his whole life. It is all he knows how to do.

So now he has been busted, it is all he can do, stand still with his stupid "if I am happy then Jesus loves me" half smile on his face. Not realizing, (or possibly even caring), how it looks to normal people.

Also as a second possibly related point, due to the fundie upbringing I doubt he has any remorse about what he has done, or sympathy for the victims. If he feels bad, IF, then it would only be because he has "sinned". But so long as you say sorry to big old Jebus in the sky, then everything will be OK. Or at least that's how he, and his hosed up church sees it.

This is not defending the paedo abuser. gently caress him and may he receive justice for the lives of the women and children he has hurt. Just offering an explanation as to why he looks and acts the wayhe does.

You would THINK that nobody but TLC would touch them again, and with this trial its doubtful anyone will want to do a TV show starring a Duggar, but I remember thinking this after the molestation news back in 2015, and then lo and behold, Counting On showed up and went 10 seasons with Josh slowly being reintroduced to TLC viewers towards the end.
