Usually cross walks are at an intersection not in the middle of a stretch of road with signs hidden by trees etc. There is also the arguement that when driving a yellow light means "slow down" whereas a red light means "stop." So an intersection that lights up in the middle of the road doesn't at first glance look like a crosswalk and most drivers will simply slow down as they run over the cross walk. This isn't desirable. So it makes more sense for the pedestrian crossing lights to be red, and look like a traditional stop light.

also the fact that yellow 100% does not mean "slow down"

Ped crossings not near junctions and pedestrians having priority at crossings are just totally normal things everywhere I've been

Cspam is 90% Americans and if you avoid them its a nicer place.

Yeah pedestrians have “priority” in America too but drivers just don’t loving feel like stopping for anything. So we try various flavors of flashy things to try and get their attention. Then we go on the internet and talk about which flashy things make us feel least likely to be a hood ornament on Connor’s brodozer 250. Walking in an American city really is something.

actionjackson posted:priced this baby out to max, includes get out of jail free card for first fifty murders I've found that when I'm doing my daily drag races down the school zone that it's much more econimical to sign up for the "stay on the road service." In absolutely numbers you only get 2 vehicular murders a week (But also one flexible road rage freebie), but since it's all wireless the police don't even stop you they just scan your plate. Plus if you do exceed the quota by running over a line of school children or something, your murder quota will rollover into the next week with no limit.

I’ve been rethinking the whole speed camera thing and I think the issue is with the existing ones just being speed traps. ubiquitous speed cameras that actually cause traffic to slow down overall would be good, but the issue is that such a thing is so far out of the status quo, even one where there are speed traps already, that it is no more likely to happen than redesigning roads. there’s an equilibrium where people hate speed traps but they make enough money for it to be worthwhile for politicians. going past that equilibrium would require the same political will as explicit anti-car measures. so it’s tantalizing to think such a thing is possible because it seems so similar to what already exists, but I don’t think that it really is. or maybe I’m wrong

teaching my daughter to stay out of the streets and now thinking of how crazy it is that everyone’s home is ringed on all sides by KILL ZONES and if your kid dies in the kill zone it’s your fault and frankly you should feel sympathy for the innocent driver who has to have child murder on their conscience (and maybe pay a fine too)

But as you say that's out of reach in the UK unless you were going way over the limit you don't pay a fine or get points for your first offense if you go to a speed awareness session, which seems like a good idea (if only because it uses your time rather than money)

The trolley problem for Americans. While driving your car come across some pedestrians crossing the road at a crosswalk. You have two options: A: Speed up and run down the pedestrians. B: Stop the car and shoot the pedestrians with your gun. What do you do?

a woman nearly hit me on my bike on a shared bike/pedestrian path yesterday because she just pulled out of a carpark across the footpath while only looking looking to the right at oncoming cars on the road if it had been a kid running along i don't even think she would have seen them

everything about car is so wrong i don't understand how people can look at it and think "yeah, this is a good idea". widening the freeway (again, 3rd time in the last 20 years) so more cars can park on it and it only takes an enormous expansion of the RoW but that's ok because it was routed through traditionally black neighborhoods to begin with so it's not like anyone who matters is inconvenienced by having their house torn down for car oh hmmm i'm starting to get an idea of why car is so popular in america
