I’m originally from down that way, it’s always been full of old people, but anecdotally I know a lot of people who lived in London moving down there in their 30s to have a family by the sea. So maybe the change in demographic is the cause of this. I think something similar happened to Canterbury in a GE?

My wife and I recently moved to Tonbridge and were surprised that the council for the town itself is Green, and all the surrounding areas are Tory. Then again the town does seem to skew younger than the villages which seem to be gammon central.

Shout out to my fellow Tonbridge goon! Congratulations on moving to the right town, rather than Tunbridge Wells which is dying a little more each day.

I read the judges sentencing remarks over that case of the 6 year old that was killed by his dad and stepmum. That poor kid 🙁

I then read some comments on the story on Reddit and some news sites. People have some very sick fantasies of what they wanted to happen to the parents in prison!

Out of interest, does anyone have any idea why I might be blocked from going on the NHS website in Chrome? Works perfectly fine in Edge so I'm not IP blocked, and doesn't work in Chrome Incognito so probably not a cookie thing. I get an Access Denied message every time.

If it's either of the two links you quoted in your post, I'm on Chrome and they both worked for me.
Clear cookies and try again maybe? Perhaps the site was having an off moment when you tried.

This is always going to be the frustrating thing about discussing capitalism and liberalism vs communism / socialism with anyone. The lib/cap side is always going to keep arguing an idealised fantasy version of their theory and ignoring real world attempts at them failing as not really being lib/cap, and it still being a noble goal. But com/soc of course is always argued in terms of the real world failures (that largely failed because of lib/cap interference or corruption), and then using that as an argument against the theoretical, idealised systems.
Capitalism/liberalism is such an individualistic ideology that its failures can always be attributed to individuals, is the thing. C______ism cannot fail, it can only be failed, basically.
Legal histories I've read attribute the bombing & murder campaign by trade unionists in the 1860s as the direct cause of the right to collective action. So, even more impressive. Didn't know he had it in him to do it personally

Very happy for all the new baby havers in the thread. I have a niece and nephew who are awesome but I seem to be one of the weirdos who has no desire to have kids of my own. People keep telling me "oh you'll change your mind when you get older" and I'm like, "I'm 33, the older I get the more I realise I don't want them."

Congrats Kin and the rest of the babyhavers! I have no helpful advice but good luck to all the babies with goons for parents.

Booster vaccinations are definitely available for all adults who had their second more than 3 months ago. Source: I am a vaccinator. The computer system also hasn't been updated and flashes up warnings every time someone is under the 6 month limit. The priority is for over-40s and vulnerable people, but walk-in clinics aren't going to turn you away.

If there's a pharmacy offering appointment-only Covid vaccines near you, I recommend going an hour before closing to see if there are any spares. There's almost always a handful of doses that need to be thrown away. You're unlikely to get one if you leave it until less than half an hour because Moderna and Pfizer require a 15 minute wait afterwards.

There's currently an issue with staffing vaccination centres, because all the volunteers who were trained up have gone back to work. This is why the number of walk-in places have dropped and there are huge queues even at the appointment-only sites. They've taken bookings expecting x-number of vaccinators but they're down one or two, there's a patient who takes three times longer to vaccinate for various reasons, and suddenly there's a gammon shouting that a 20-minute delay is outrageous and he can't possibly wait that long because he's parked on double yellows and it will be our fault if he get another ticket.

Got my booster Monday before last at 39 with no comorbidities by just chain turning up to the nearest walk in centre and seeing if they would allow it. Wife has severe comorbidities and I look after my 79 y/o mother with parkinsons and both were boosted and leaning on me to just keep trying. Eventually they had not much of a queue and said, sure go for it. So keep trying goons!

I'm super glad it was perfectly two weeks ahead as I have to go to Spain on Monday to close down my bank account before an accidental direct debit drains it away (long story involving house insurance staying on after selling and not reading Spanish fine print...)

Got my n95 mask (sadly couldn't get a razor mask and feel like a nerdy cyberpunk on the plane), got a PCR home test kit here for when I come backand now just waiting for the 48h before flying to fill out the passenger locator form for Spain.

Hopefully they don't need a PCR and a week wait after entry but if they (sensibly) do then so be it. I'll sit on the beach and catch up on all the books the thread has recommended on the last year! Of course this emergency trip had to happen on my week holiday I planned to spend bingeing the ffxiv expansion but eh.

iirc it's mostly for the people doing the vaccines so they can see which ones you've had previously. The only time I've had to show it was for second and third shots, nobody anywhere else cares, and the NHS app has a proper record that actually is a record.
