Sorry, we have discussed adding oars but will not do so since we feel it is too multiplayer-focused and could lead to difficulties balancing boats in the future.

Oh wow, what a bummer. Makes me think they don't know what kind of game they made and they're huffing something if they think this game would be remotely enjoyable solo in the same way as co-op.

Actually that whole AMA is incredibly uninspiring. The answer to "will we be able to dig" is "no, the way we set up our terrain generation precludes having complex tunnels and overlapping terrain, that's why all our ores and caves and things are static elements in the world that ignore the terrain and load you into a new area" not "no you're not a dwarf ;) "

In any case, hoping somebody out there inspired by Valheim working on a game with all the things people seem to want.

I had a shitton of fun playing this solo for 80+ hours, and I'd be a bit peeved if something like a decent against-wind travel speed was locked behind multiplayer.

It sort of already is depending on how far you’re traveling since multiple people can chain the Moder power together. And if you plan ahead with a portal at the ritual stones you can switch to something else once you get where you’re going and when you’re going back.

I’m not too chuffed about not getting oars, I feel it would be a nice atmosphere-type thing is all.

The former explanation would have been much better for the general public. The "you're not a dwarf" is dismissive and won't stop people from still trying to clamour for it.

Besides, don't vikings dig underground? I thought that was part of the process to make their rotten shark.

Has anyone had a metal tier just not unlock? I've got black metal bars and nothing to craft with them. Both the forge and the build menu are missing things I know should be there. It's probably my fault for using the EpicLoot mod along with a recycling mod so I think I might have recycled a black metal item before actually smelting the ore. Is there a way to unlock the tier through the console or a save/world editor or something? I tried loading a vanilla game and picked up a bar that popped out of the smelter but nothing happened. I even tried spawning in black metal items but they don't show up at the forge like other items you pick up do if you haven't unlocked them yet.

You need to go to the mountains and kill Moder. She drops items for new stuff. If you already have then you didn’t pick up some of her stuff.

If they have black metal bars that means they've beaten Moder, you need her drops in order to make a blast furnace.

Oh, right. Sorry. In that case yeah the only other possibility is missing linen.

Oh maaaaaaaaaan, I was trying to skip that fight. It's extremely tedious even when you're over-leveled/over-equipped. Thanks, I'll give it a shot. I didn't have this problem with bronze or iron, so I couldn't really figure out the difference. Gotta pay the mod tax.

If you're not opposed to console commands you can grant yourself the items you need to make the Artisan Table. That's what I did in my no-portals world, bc I needed to set up multiple bases and didn't wanna kill a Moder for each. The item ID is "DragonTear".

Yeah, I tried that. My only hope is that the drop is somehow different from the console spawned item (but why would it be) or maybe there's a flag or something. I dunno. If not, no big deal. I'm about ready to put this away until the next update anyway.

edit: picking up linen unlocked the equipment. I didn't realize it was required in so many recipes. I think I'm missing some building pieces, but whatever.

As I recall black metal is just wildly underutilized in buildings. Like not at all. Makes sense because it's right at the edge of the currently available content after all.

Linen is kind of weird and feels like they just wanted to use it more? Like the opposite of black metal. Like why do I need linen to upgrade a sword or axe.

I'm part of a group on a dedicated server and up until now we've been reserving the boss fights for group sessions. This has been keeping the group locked from progressing individually. Any reason to do this? Will it break the co-op experience if someone solos the bosses and opens up new tiers of crafting? I think that opens up new raids so we could have plains level raids on someone who's still working with bronze age equipment. Correct?

Kibayasu

Defeating bosses does allow more dangerous attacks to happen to everyone. Some of them are region specific but there seems to always be at least one more dangerous event that can happen almost anywhere. Looking at the wiki once you defeat Moder the Fuling event can spawn in any biome except the mountains until you defeat Yagluth. Those guys can gently caress you up good even in fully upgraded padded armor.

Is there a new event after defeating Yagluth, or does it just end the Fuling one? Been sitting on the boss for easy black metal farming.

As long as someone had built adequate trenches/earthen walls around a secure base then opening up more threatening raids isn't actually more of a threat. Just means bigger nasties sitting outside your trench/wall.

Except frost drakes. That one can actually cause problems if you're not moderately geared and have good structure coverage of the important bits of your base.

The frost wyvern raids are a pain in the rear end, especially if you’ve got livestock. I can’t remember how many times I’ve lost my 2* boars to a drake attack. Gotta build a roof over those piggies.

You can start your own local game and bring your geared up character in to beat the boss and bring the key item back to your regular world. Won't change anybody else's experience.

And the only key item you need is the one from the mountain boss. You can easily get in to swamp dungeons by placing a chair inside the gate. Can probably go in to your own game to select a power too

I'm guessing you can basically build a chair just inside the doorway and then "sit" in it, which probably clips you through the metal door. Probably do the same thing to get out of the crypt.

The ground-pound hammers like the stagbreaker can trigger a "too hard" message if they hit a silver node in the AoE, iirc. They might do the same for buried slag heaps in the swamp too.

Either way yes, it's an exploit to get silver without needing the wishbone or to hunt for millions of years looking for a magically exposed node.

Yeah but some people have convinced themselves that the only way to play the game is to painstakingly exploit everything and that Bonemass is an insurmountable challenge because it takes awhile to kill him with bows and kiting. If it can't be killed with a bow from a distance and no prep work it's just unfair and should be skipped, or some poo poo.

Or challenge runs I guess.

Considering how much of a pain in the rear end the mountains are when you're under geared I'd rather deal with Bonemass.

I appreciate the exploit though. Half the fun of games like this is to see how far you can push the mechanics.

My favorite one so far is realizing that landing in water will negate all fall damage. It has to be deep enough to swim in at least. Another guy on my server had the idea to create a one-way "elevator" this way, so I built a ~10 story castle with a shaft in the center that runs the height of the building. Its right up against a coastline so I had to do a little pickaxing to get the water deep enough in the right spot. The elevator system works way better than I expected. I find myself using it regularly to get to the dock boat, or just ground level.

My last playthrough I had a decent sized mountain next to where I built my main base. Turns out there were huge veins of silver sticking out of the terrain in a few places. Made collecting silver rather anticlimactic.

Well it came up originally when we were playing MP with like 8 people, 2 of them had absolutely abysmal internet connections, and a friendly agreement that we would take on the bosses together. Trying to do Bonemass that way made it seem nearly impossible.

We could have (and eventually did) just break into smaller groups to do it at which point it was no problem, but in the meantime it was nice to snag little bits of silver for Lox capes so we could run around the mountains without potions.
