Does anyone else remember the mid-90s film Different for Girls? It was about two childhood friends who reconnect as adults, and one of them is a transwoman. From memory, it was pro-trans (and anti-police), although I imagine there would be all sorts of cringey moments on a rewatch. They had a male actor playing the transgender character for starters.

What I'm trying to say is that there was trans-supporting mainstream media 25 years ago, TERFdom wasn't a universal state of being, and even at the time it was originally broadcast Linehan's transphobic IT Crowd episode was excessive. It feels like we've gone backwards.

On that note, Coronation Street had a trans character starting in 1998:

Now I didn't actually watch Coronation Street but from what I've read others saying it seems to have been handled quite well?

As far as I've heard on my currently limited reading into British LGBT cultural history it has held up pretty well, aside from having a cis actor play her. I think most people forgive that as an aspect of the time it aired and not a deliberate form of transphobia/limiting of the role.

Yeah it was handled excellently if I remember correctly. My family was a big fan of corrie back then, used to watch it together.
I seem to remember her husband Roy just went 'yeah so what' when asked about it and that was it really.
Course they had some characters written to be transphobe, after all its a story in a soap opera and you have to have tension.
But it ended up no one giving two shits about it.

The problem with a 'failsafe' ID card is that routine interactions are focussed on establishing that somebody has the card, not on establishing their ID. At the moment people can muddle through with utility bills and bank cards as well as passports. With a specific ID Card, it'll end up as the sort of situation where if someone gets mugged, has their house burn down, or posts their ID off to get their details updated, and they suddenly can't do anything because they don't have the one magic card. Provisional driving licences aren't always accepted as ID, for reasons that nowhere has been able to articulate.

We're getting this way with 2 factor authentication. I can't access my email or bank account without my mobile phone, and I've often wondered what would happen if it broke. The point of failure there wouldn't be that I can't prove my identity, it's that I lack a physical thing. If voter ID laws are passed, I bet there will be newspaper articles about people being disenfranchised because there's been a delay in driving licence/passport renewals or something, and the polling station won't accept anything else as valid.

Link your card to your biometrics and every time you use it to verify your identity you get your thumbprint scanned.

Makes replacing them easy as well unless you've managed to burn off your prints.

If anyone is interested in a socialist novel (fiction but has connection to real events) set in the Welsh Valleys coal mines pre WW2 (and written in 1937)I highly recommend Cwmardy by Lewis Jones.

I found it in my late father's books a couple of weeks ago and just started reading it last week, just 50 pages to go. I'll be ordering the follow up book "We Live" when I've finished this. Despite it being written over 80 years ago, it's an easy read.

Wiki about the author (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Jones_(writer))

quote:

Lewis Jones, writer, and political activist of the left, (28 December 1897 – 27 January 1939) was born in Clydach Vale in industrialised South Wales.[1]

Although his novels are more studied by academics now than by general readers, Jones occupies an honourable place in the history of left-wing politics in Britain, and in the ranks of socialist writers. Like many young activists of his generation he attended the Central Labour College in London from 1923–25, where he joined the Communist Party of Great Britain. During the 1926 General Strike he was imprisoned for three months in Swansea Prison for his trade union activities in the Nottinghamshire coalfield.

Once back at the pits, he became chairman and then checkweighman of the Cambrian Lodge of the South Wales Miners Federation. Although often seen as a lesser post to that of Lodge Chairman, in a time of industrial unrest the checkweighman was a vital part of the miners' protection against employers using piece work rules to drive down wages, and it was a role in which Jones was likely to routinely come into conflict with management.

In 1929, he resigned, refusing to work with 'scab' (non-unionised) labour. He remained unemployed for the rest of his life, although, he was likely to be permanently busy on political business. He was extremely popular amongst the rank-and-file Party members, but his association with "Hornerism" (Communists working within established trades unions), his turbulent private life and his distrust of the cult of personality (he was sent home from the Soviet Union for ignoring a standing ovation to Joseph Stalin) meant that he was repeatedly suspended and disciplined by the Party. As the Welsh organiser for the National Unemployed Workers Movement, widely regarded as a Communist front, he led the 1932, 1934 and 1936 hunger marches to London. Also in 1936, he was elected as one of the two Communist members on to the Glamorgan County Council. In South Wales at this time his attachment to the Communist Party would not have harmed his reputation as a political activist and leader.

Lewis Jones died on 27 January 1939 at the end of a day in which he addressed over 30 meetings in support of the republican side of the Spanish Civil War.[2] He is buried at Trealaw Cemetery in Trealaw.

His books provide a description of life in a Welsh mining community of their time; there is an awareness of the crisis of masculinity that mass unemployment brought home to those communities, and the description of workers in struggle with their employers is unflinching in its acknowledgement of defeat as well as victory.[1]

Pre-NHS, pre-welfare state, and somewhat pre-unions. Big Jim is a miner and his son Len can't wait to leave school and get down the mine. The book covers strikes over the mining company's attempts to cut the wages, when the police and army were sent in, Len developing as a leader and other matters of poverty.

I find myself wondering how much of Lewis Jones is reflected in Len!

While the savings account thing is entirely new to me, the US has double taxation treatiea with most of the world, where you can deduct taxes paid to one country from tax liability to the other.

I am most familiar with the Sri Lankan terms on the matter but I'd be real shocked if we didn't have one of those with the UK.

The moment the voltage stops the effect stops, and that's part of the problem because plod use them, like here, in completely inappropriate circumstances. The bloke was unarmed and not an active threat to anyone, even himself, but was being non-compliant, and police use them like magic wands that make people stop what they're doing and do what they're told.

Mind you there's another school of thought that using them like this results in less injuries than wrestling a non-compliant person to the ground and is so actually safer, but the problem with that is a) nobody's actually bothered to quantify that and b) it only reinforces the magic wand thinking and you end up with people getting taser darts in the eye or 10,000 volts across a heart defect they didn't know they had just because a copper couldn't be bothered de-escalating.
