It was going to be so either way. If Omicron can outcompete Delta though and has less mortality / send less people to the hospitals then that's good.

Yeah that seems to be the initial silver lining: If its not putting people in hospital beds, then its gonna be a less of an issue than Delta, which very much can put you in the hospital.

According to the Ukraine guy on Radio War Nerd he doesn’t think Russian troops would be ready for a full scale invasion until after January since the buildup is still in early stages. Maybe they’re trying to be ready for some planned coup/assassination in the future that will give the pretext to hope to avoid intervention from the EU or US. There was already a mysterious hit attempt on a top government official recently in Ukraine that almost certainly involves Russian intelligence in some way.

NATO nor the EU have any obligations to come to Ukraines aid should Russia fully invade, and everyone involved knows that. The question is the juice worth the squeeze for Putin? Doing so would put further major sanctions on Russia, further galvanize the EU and NATO towards an aggressive posture towards Russia and most likely lead to a low scale insurgency in the occupied region. Unfortunately rationality might not prevail in this sense, no one is backing down in the Donbas and that could lead to unforeseen events.

Putin gains nothing by simply pulling out of the Donbas, and it is not costing him much by staying there other than vacation expenses. I think he is aiming for concessions and lifting of current sanctions from the West in exchange for any good behavior on his part, I also think we should not give him anything...

This more or less is the first to confirm the "immune evasion" aspect of Omicron - the best protection against Omicron is a combination of vaccination and prior actual vaccination. Wild cards remaining: what about T-cell / other immune protection provided by vaccines, what about Moderna/J&J and is this preprint just two Pfizer doses (I'm not fuckin reading it), is this thing more contagious than Delta (or will it flame out like Beta), and do we need a special booster for it. All still unknown!

First takes I've seen on it from other pretty active covid scientists have stated that the loss in vaccine prevention is substantial, but a 3rd dose puts you in the range to help combat that pretty well. Ultimately a more tailored vaccine for the new spike antigen profile will be better, but a booster should at least help, but not be as good as protection vs the alpha variant / other close relatives of alpha.

So, still no tremendous "sky is falling" worry on it at least and it's not a completely novel escape variant (ie the current vaccine would offer almost no protection, the worst case).

Oh hey, I just heard NPR play a clip of limp-dick Dole from 1976:

https://www.nytimes.com/1976/10/28/archives/dole-denies-talking-of-democrat-wars-says-he-never-used-phrase-that.html

quote:

Senator Robert J. Dole, the Republican Vice‐Presidential candidate, insisted today that he had never referred to the four wars in which the United States has been involved in this century as “Democrat wars.”

Asked if he had not meant to back off yesterday from what appeared to be an accusation that the Democrats were responsible for the last four wars, he said:

“No, I'm going back to my premise. I didn't want the media to be confused. I said in the debate, if they want to dredge up the past we can dredge up some of the past.”

Pressed as to whether he was still going to refer to “Democrat wars,” he replied sharply:

“Never did, I never did.”

The quotation read:

“It is an appropriate topic, I guess, but it's not a very good issue any more than the war in Vietnam would be or World 11 or World I or the war in Korea—all Democrat wars, all in this century. I figured up the other day, if we added up the killed and wounded in Democrat wars in this century, it would be about 1.6 million Americans, enough to fill the city of Detroit.”

Mr. Speakes was asked to inquire why the candidate would have denied using the phrase.

A few moments later, Mr. Speakes returned and said:

“He said you have to look in context at the whole thing. He did not recall this specific quote.”

He also quoted Mr. Dole as having repeated that “If it's fair to blame Ford for Watergate, then it's fair to blame the Democrats for the wars.”

Asked if Senator Dole had not been arguing that it was not fair to blame the President for Watergate, Mr. Speakes replied:

“That's right.”

Then asked if it was therefore unfair to blame the Democrats for the wars, Mr. Speakes said:

“Oh, that's what he's been trying to say all along.”

Okay, at this point I'm pretty convinced these shitbag parents bought their kid a gun in the hopes he'd kill himself and stop being their problem.

Good grief:

quote:

Law enforcement officials tracked the couple down and arrested them early Saturday morning at an art studio in a warehouse in Detroit close to the Canadian border where they said the Crumbleys were “hiding”.

Their attorneys have repeatedly denied that the couple were trying to evade authorities, instead claiming it was a “matter of logistics” around when and how they would turn themselves in.

I wonder if either of them will spill the beans about the truth behind the gun purchase. It definitely seems like they don't give a poo poo about the kid, so I can only wonder what, if anything, was going through their heads.
