Yeah none of that changes the fact that the USSR did far more than any other power to defeat Germany. The course of the war was set after Stalingrad. Hitler himself admitted this. American contributions were minor compared to those of the USSR.

The impact that Stalingrad had was massive yes, but I don't know that the allies would have gained a foothold back on the mainland without the American's.

American contributions were minor compared to those of the USSR. Eh, it's a complicated argument. No one can say that the Soviet Union didn't do the overwhelming majority of fighting and dying against Nazi Germany, but American material contributions via Lend-Lease were a major factor in the Soviet Union's ability to conduct the war. The logistical capabilities provided by the United States played a huge role in the USSR's ability to sustain advances later in the war, thanks to over 400,000 trucks and 1,200 locomotives. The US also provided huge amounts of food, ammunition and other supplies, without which countless more Soviet soldiers and civilians would have perished. The invasion of Normandy also put immense pressure on the Germans, and made it far more difficult for them to respond to the advances made by Operation Bagration in August of 1944. So yeah, you can say that the US contributed less to the overall defeat of Nazi Germany, but the American contribution was by no means minor. Stalin himself would have argued otherwise.

Of course, one of the biggest American contributions to the Soviet war effort actually happened over a decade before the war started: when the Soviet Union commissioned the industrial design firm Albert Kahn Associates, which had designed most of the factories in Detroit up to that point (Including Ford's massive River Rouge facility) to design hundreds of new factories for the first Five Year Plan. Many of the factories that were designed and built were ostensibly for tractors, but could (And were) easily converted to build tanks. These plants would end up forming the bedrock of Soviet tank production, and included the famed Stalingrad Tractor Factory and the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant.

The actual article says the "leaders of this movement are fractured and don't know exactly what to do," but their suggestions are: - Offer progressive economic policies while appearing strong on defense and crime. - Don't escalate culture issues/wokeness. - Invent a new culture war issue that is visible and has no existing base of support and act on it (like the V-Chip) to show that you aren't an out of touch cosmopolitan elite and you "get it." They don't really have more details than that and the leader of the movement is basically begging someone to "figure out how to fill in the blanks!" So, there isn't really a plan beyond a very vague one and it isn't anything that 100 other people haven't said. Not sure why the author decided to do a profile on them.

Groovelord Neato posted:This is a losing strategy in a two party system: "Seem moderate" seems to be the winning part. Youngkin didn't have policies different from any other GOP candidate, was endorsed by Trump, and openly promised to be like Trump. But, most voters said he would implement policies different from other Republicans or Trump because he seemed more caring, professional, and reasonable. Even though Youngkin himself was saying he would do these things, the voters thought he wouldn't really do them because he was reasonable and soft-spoken. You saw a similar, but opposite, situation where voters in 2008 perceived Obama as much more moderate than Hillary and in 2016 when a chunk of voters thought that Bernie was more moderate than Hillary.
