AITA for asking a woman if she's had a hysterectomy?

quote:

I (M 32) was out with some friends (all vaxxed and boostered) for a brunch recently. I'm the only guy in the group with 4 women, but one of my friends, let's call her Jess, brought a work friend, Bella. Now, I've met Bella before and have to say that I don't really like her. I don't /dislike/ her, but I don't seek out her company or enjoy my time with her because she's just not a nice person. She's very vocal about her beliefs, one of which being "men are trash." I get the sentiment, it's meant to target the patriarchy and toxic masculinity, but it's still rough to know that, to her, I'm trash no matter what I do due to my gender.

So, we're all chatting and having a good time, drinking our locally-sourced hippy sups, and the topic of abortion comes up. This is definitely a topic we've all talked about before, and everyone has really similar views on it (pro-choice if it matters). Someone brought up what's happening in Texas, and I went to say something about Roe v. Wade when Bella snapped her fingers at me and said "No uterus, no opinion."

I was a bit taken aback because, while I understand the sentiment, it's not like I'm out here making laws, I'm just chatting about current issues. Here's the part where I might be the AH, though. Bella has talked at length about the hysterectomy she had a couple of years back, how it was one of the best things to happen to her because she now has no period and no need for birth control. So, once she said the "no opinion" line I looked at her and asked: "Didn't you have a hysterectomy?" The table went silent for a second, Bella called me a choice word, then her and Jess got up to leave. My other friends who stayed found the whole thing funny and we continued to hang out for a while longer, but Jess texted me that I was completely out of line, sexist, and that Bella was no longer comfortable being around me.

So, AITA?

I might be the AH because I brought up someone's medical history, which could have been too personal for me to point out, plus it felt pretty petty on my end.

It's a teaching opportunity. Tell her the meat is cooked to this doneness for a reason and try to sell the story, say you will be really happy if she's willing to try a piece, but that of course you will take the dish back and do it well done if she does not like it.

Have the piece be a relatively thin one, and if the pastry is so dark you can't just finish it in the oven then just hit the meat with a torch.

AITA For not caring that my school bully died?

quote:

I (28m) was relentlessly bullied through school by this guy every single day he would target me and you could see he really enjoyed making me miserable.

Flash forward to the present he died in a motorcycle accident and I still talk regularly with my friends from school, they all said how it was so sad and how he was a nice guy. I decided to stay quiet on the matter until a friend asked me what I thought. I told them whilst it was sad he'd died young and I feel for his family that the death didn't really affect me personally. This turned into a debate because after school he apparently become quite a nice guy, I told them I never saw that side to him and he never apologised for anything he did and I bumped into him a few times after school and he never said a word to me so to me I'll always know him as a dick. This caused an uproar and they told me I can't talk about him like that because he'd died and I should be more respectful.

The conversation changed eventually and we carried on as normal but it started to really wind me up as I don't think I said anything wrong, AITA?

They made the point that they wanted to sit down and eat once it's cooked, not dick about in the kitchen because someone doesn't like pink meat, which is pretty reasonable, especially because they're primarily cooking for the friend paying and everyone else is along for the ride.

Making the Beef Wellington OP change their entire cooking plan to accommodate a late-add who eats meat wrong (and may not even know this argument is happening on their behalf) for a meal you're not paying for is a dick move, imo.

OP may still suck but they ain't the rear end in a top hat in the situation.

This is also a possibility, but may not be well done enough for someone who really really is averse to any pink. I think they just don't know how to enjoy beef, but whatever: it's easy enough to accommodate if you give half a poo poo to do so.

I can't speak for Ava, but I can't digest red meat well. Pink is fine, but if I say pink people go for red so I order medium-well at least. In a situation like this I'd go for the company, but some people get REALLY offended when you don't eat their food so I'd make some excuse about having too big a lunch or something and only let them know what it does to my bowels if they pressed the issue.

That all this is going on about Ava without involving Ava is what makes this really weird.

I feel like if you have bad opinions about stuff, your uterus status doesn't matter. I'm a pro-choice cis man, I was having a discussion with a former work colleague, a pro-life cis woman. She'd softened her stance somewhat, but still believed in parental consent laws. I was like "I dunno if some 16 year old girl gets raped by her father I don't think that same father should have a say about what happens" and she tries the "well, you'll never be the person who has to make that decision" line and I'm thinking "... yeah. exactly. That's one of the many reasons I wouldn't want to legislate what a woman can do with her body."

Anyways lol at the OP owning the annoying finger snap lady.

Agreed on both counts.

But really, if you want to host........learn to be a good one. This isn't a big ask. They're only making it out to be because of some stupid "you must eat it the way I serve it or it's an insult" things that is just really really tone deaf.

Besides, beef wellington is tenderloin which has almost no taste to begin with. The entire point of wellington is to give it something other than texture. If there's anything you can "over" cook, it's tenderloin. You just need to do it just enough and not too much and it will still have a good texture (hint: put a pat of butter on the slice before you cook it more because it dries out easily). Maybe "hobby chef"/lovely host needs to up their game.

Cooking something complicated for the first time for a group of people is super stressful. If they want to be a part of that experiment and eat whatever comes out of your first stab, that’s great and they’re good friends. But if anyone wants to do a special order, I would absolutely tell them to gently caress off. But it’s weird that no one has talked to this person and asked if they wanted a special order.

codswallop posted:

I let my best friend move in with us because he was going through a bad time now he and my wife have gotten close and want us to start a poly "family"

Yep, thats what I am going through nowadays, lol. I cant help but laugh at this suggestion because the only other option is to cry.

My best friend of 8 years recently lost his job so his apartment became too costly to afford, so when he asked to move in with me till the end of the year I agreed. He moved in with us at the start of November. And after a few days I noticed the two of them getting closer, but as I considered him as a brother an affair was the furthest thing from my mind.

But as we all know, human depravity knows no bound, my wife approached me 3 days ago and said that she and my best friend have fallen in love but of respect for me they have not done anything physical yet. They want the 3 of us to start a poly family which will be the best solution in this scenario. As she loves both of us and doesnt want to lose me and this is the true way to live by sharing love, lol.

My best friend also talked with me and said that he always had a crush on my wife and it would have been wrong to deny this crush because he didnt want to be dishonest to his true self.
So my question is, do I even try to save my marriage? Or should I save my sanity and run? Any other advice for me?

Edit/update- A lot of you are asking why am I not more angry, why didnt I punch him in the face etc. What does that get me other than a chance to spend a night in a police lockup? I cant punch my way to a world where my best friend and wife are better people, I have to live in this world where I have to deal with these two. So I have asked him to leave and he has said that he will leave by Monday and I didnt want to argue really so I agreed.

As for my wife she is saying she is willing to stay monogamous to me if thats what I want and we can get through this by attending some counselling. I am not sure if things can go back to how they were.

Also the house is in the name of my elder brother and I dont even pay rent so I have to see a lawyer to understand what my options are. I talked to my brother and he said that he will ask me to move out the moment I am ready, and if I move out then obviously she has to move out too. But I will meet some lawyers to find out just how does it go down? And no, I dont want to be in a poly relationship, I would rather be single.

quote:

Update- My "friend" moved out on Monday and I was not at the house when he moved out so I dont know what did he and my wife talk about. And my brother has formally asked us to vacate his house by the end of this month, and since I have not paid any rents for the time I have lived here, I dont have any squatting rights. So I told my wife that we will be homeless by the end of the month and she should make her own arrangements. She says that we should do marriage counselling and she values our marriage more than any poly relationship and she was never going to go ahead without my consent. Also that she has gone no contact with my "friend" and now we should focus on repairing our marriage, lol. Sorry, couldnt stop myself from lolling while writing this. I am staying in the guest room and enjoying some nice takeout food (not very healthy but very tasty nonetheless). She has been trying to be more attentive and loving towards me but I am just counting my days.

Anyways thats my update, hopefully I didnt leave anything out, as I am a bit high rn. Thanks for all the support.
