I've played in several successful veteran games with pubbies where the only communication was using the in-game commands and directions, such as "Ready" or "Go Here" for telling folks to group up at a particular bottleneck.

I wouldn't necessarily say that using a mic is required to be successful, but communicating at all definitely is.

For me the most aggravating part about veteran and nightmare is the large amount of unavoidable damage that the game likes to pour onto your party all the time. A perfect example of this is the ending bridge in 'Cabins by the Lake' where I've often gotten a corruption card for reeker hordes. On recruit it's manageable even with the director spawning too many specials but veteran and nightmare is basically getting fingercuffed by retches on both sides when you take the bridge. Comparing this game to L4D there are so many special archetypes that got turned up to 11 and give you no hope of avoiding damage. Retches can just walk around a corner and start nuking your health and leave a damage pool You can't take them out in time because they either have such high stagger resistance that you can't interrupt their attacks (Retches and Reekers) or they can snipe you (Hocker) and run away while regular zombies slowly take your health down and then pop back up to do it again.

I believe the L4D2 Director won't spawn 4 specials that can incap. It'll do 1-3 of Hunter/Smoker/Jockey/Charger but the 4th spot will always be a Boomer or Spitter, to avoid the Instant Incap problem. 3 sudden incaps is a problem but entirely fixable.

So much of this is how quick a lot of the mutations are to attack, retches and hockers will pop up and snipe you and run away so quickly. Sure if you're able to focus on them you can pop them before they attack, but if anything else is going on they get free shots and the damage racks up absurdly fast. Also some of the combos are just absurd, retch spits and then a stalker jumps someone near you, even if you insta kill the stalker the stun lasts so long you take most of your health from the vomit.

Yeah, and on top of that the L4D specials were generally fragile and all of their attacks could be interrupted with a well-timed shove (with the exception of the Charger)

It's not necessarily the incaps but the merging of specials. A smoker at least has to put itself at risk by maintaining line of sight to pull someone towards them but a hocker, being a smoker and spitter combo, doesn't. The stalker is probably the most pure archetype that transferred between the games and it's acceptable to me because it needs line of sight to activate its pounce and strangle attack like a hunter.

This is the impression I've gotten since the beta, especially with the card picking system where some brain dead ding-dong can hold up the group in the safe room for 3 minutes every single round.

I still have no idea how the game launched like this. The beta wasnt all busted wrt difficulty. Hell it was the reason my cousin and I liked it, it was just hard enough to give us those clutch moments of desperately fighting for our lives. Wtf happened between then and release?

That patch looks great. Boss cards on the first stage were incredibly agitating.

You had like 2-3 cards, white weapons, and no cash. Also I usually play Shotty or Smg builds so it sucked lol. None of my combos were functional and I was deep into damage fall off distances.

Not only they have decreased the difficulty with these changes:

Just got this on gamepass. You start in a base and there are like 15 indicators to do stuff. I just want to shoot zombies, is there a guide or tutorial for what all this stuff is? Feels like I just joined part 2 of a game or something

All that poo poo in the camp is window dressing, just hit tab and that'll give you the real game menu.

Unless some discord somewhere has something put together, this thread is as close to a group as you'll find. I think most goons tried on gamepass at release, got destroyed by the baffling design/difficulty choices and never looked back.

Ok I played lot today. It is 100% better. Veteran is a challenge and will punish mistakes like spreading out or not prepping for an event, but the special spam is toned way down. It is totally manageable. The free x2 first aid uses are clutch.

This feels so much better, it actually feels fair.

Also, there is no plural when the context is an argument with an individual rather than a group. Somfin shouldn't put words in my mouth.

very happy with these changes. i hadn't booted the game in a bit but i'm enthusiastically evangelizing them to my friend group, we were finding recruit mostly too easy if sometimes too hard because of bullshit cards but vet a total total roadblock, in particular because of a bunch of things they tweaked. sad for the movement speed nerfs but w/e.

If the game calculates you are about to fly over an edge to an instant death, you'll grab the first grabbable ledge near your launch site.

Doesn't explain the decision to go with instant death water pits on The Clog, though. I guess the idea was just "gently caress you"? :psyduck:

That’s how it was in L4D, I think it’s intended and the instadeath might be an oversight
