it’s super dumb. electrons flowing through a wire create a magnetic field which will create a trickle of electric flow in the opposite direction in parallel wires. veritasium’s video was conditioned on a theoretical light bulb that lights up with literally any nonzero current, so that trickle is good enough. as electroboom points out this is very silly since actually the light bulb would never turn off, either because of the miniscule leakage that goes across even an open switch or simply because electrons in a wire at >0K are never perfectly at rest veritasium also wildly over-interprets this as meaning that electrical energy doesn’t flow through wires. he conflates this a lot with the well-known idea that electrical energy is not carried by electrons, it’s carried by fields. but there’s a major difference in magnitude between the energy carried by this induced current and the energy carried by the electric fields produced in the wire by the source; you can’t analyze the latter as if it were incidental to the former. also, these magnetic fields only exist because of the motion of electrons in the wire, so what is with this weird philosophical point that the wires don’t matter
