In NZ there are plenty of people who pronounce naan with a short a like in bran. It's usually a good sign they're a racist twat too because it shows they're unwilling to make the smallest effort to pronounce non-English words correctly, even when the necessary sounds are very easy and common in NZ English.

"Disaster" actually has an R at the end while "pasta" does not. Also the vowel sounds are entirely different.
