You have to approach it like playing xcom on ironman, that you do your best to keep individual survivors alive but sometimes poo poo happens and you lose one of your best people but in the grand scheme of things it's not that important because really the settlement and your gear sets are your 'characters' much more than the person wearing them, and the game continues on just fine.

I also don't really get the degree of disdain for kdm. I'm extremely picky as a gamer and lean heavily towards euros for the most part and mechanically I think it's one of the best games I own. As you say the gear system is phenomenal and leads to some really tough choices and characters that play and feel wildly different to each other (imo it's just miles ahead of the gear in any other game in a similar genre) and the enemy AI is so far beyond anything else I've played in a way that makes fighting different enemies a totally unique experience.

I'd never defend the stupid 'rocks fall you die' events, but it's such a tiny tiny part of the game that I always have to wonder if the people who bring that up have actually played enough to see that.

To go quickly is foolish. To go slowly is prudent. Not to go; that is wisdom.

Good for you if you enjoy the game.

I tried it two years ago on TTP Simulator to find out what it was about. The first real fight two of my survivors died on the hunt and another one got -1 attack (so I faced the lion with 3 attacks/turn instead of 8, and only 2 warm bodies to soak hits with).

3 years (fights) later I faced a boss that got stuck into an infinite combo after a 2 hour fight.

It’s not a good game.

KDM is bad. I went through part of a campaign back then and there’s really no interesting choices in combat. I recall it was more or less straightforward what the best move was every turn. Pretty much what samurai said. The minis are the main selling point. I do like the lantern dude to paint cuz it looks like the enemy from blood borne but nobody seems to want to sell that one by itself.

But 1889 is good and I’m hyped for it getting to $150k and hitting the top of the BGG hotness. :krad:

Those bashing KDM are missing the big picture. The important news is that the tasteful big boobies pinups are available in the KDM store now!!!!! KDM is so great!!!!! Wearing a KDM pinup is a mandatory requirement at our game night table as proof that we are all good taste havers.

Have a look at the pinups art on the KDM store, and if you still have a neutral or negative view of the game, I will strongly judge you.

Edit: I won't post pictures here because I don't know if it's allowed. Not everyone can fully appreciate tasteful art.

How far through did you get? Not bashing your experience just genuinely curious as it's so different from my own experience. I've found kdm to have way more depth and tactical options than anything else I've played, the only thing that would even come close would be Gloomhaven and even that falls short compared to the choices you have later in a kdm campaign. The first few years definitely lack all that though - I find it comparable to xcom in that sense too, in that initially there's not much to do but move and attack, but once you start unlocking all the special abilities, the option to interrupt to do extra actions etc it becomes wide open.

KDM is a bad game with gross content and the creators made and market it with very specific demographics in mind.

Early to mid is my guess. Gloomhaven starts out difficult and scales well with players. Given the options now, even if combat is more interesting later, I’d still recommend GH every time. GH has awful setup and upkeep issues that require many aftermarket devices but the interesting choices are there from the start.

Yeah I would too, for all those reasons. I love both games but GH is way more accessible and rewarding straight away even if for me KDM is more rewarding in the longer term.

I know that kdm has awful optional minis that focus solely on t&a but what's the base game like, is it still horny or is that all just the weird side poo poo they sold?

Anything I know about kdm is pretty much limited to reviews saying that the gameplay loop is boring and tedious and a lot of talking about the add-on t&a minis

It's about 90% grimdark and creepy in a way that I actually really like - reminds me of dark souls - and 10% weirdly jarring boobs/dicks/juvenile humour (often combined, so lots of body horror etc). The base game minis, apart from the starting survivors are generally fairly well covered, most of the weird horny comes through in the artwork accompanying the various games events.

And before anyone kramers in to well actually that's not in KDM, yes I'm aware that the franchise that has the rape monster minis didn't actually put any in this specific game. This is not the defense you think it is.

It's not hard to see why KDM is popular. An RPG boardgame campaign with lots of building and crafting is the goddamn Holy Grail and historically the bar for that kind of game set ridiculously low. People still unironically like HeroQuest. Gloomhaven exists, but even it has its share of flaws.

I don't want to welcome the players of the horror game for perverts to the hobby. There's a significant difference between "oh I like Monopoly anyone want to talk about Monopoly :)" and the dumpster fire that is Kingdom Death.

lol that you think people come to this hobby by buying $400-1600 games that feature sexual violence

Suddenly Susan

Cool to see this discussion escalate from telling a poster the game he’s enjoying was bad and gross to proclaiming everyone who’s ever played KDM is a pro-rape pervert that couldn’t possibly have friends that they introduced the $200 core box to. No wonder so many first time posters to this thread never come back.

How many people are honestly being introduced to hobbyist board games through something that costs hundreds of dollars? The average backer spent $378 on KDM. In my estimations, sure, maybe they were wargamers or miniatures gamers before, but I just have trouble imagining someone coming off the street and being hype for a board game like that from the get go. Maybe this is painting with a broad brush, but your average non-gamer is not hyped for something complicated, and this is known to general pop culture.

Besides, the original KDM had 5000 backers, which sounds like a lot, but Joking Hazard had 60,000 and Exploding Kittens had 200,000 backers. This is partially because they came with established fan bases but those bases were not directly related to board games. It's the same way that Ghostbusters board game might get someone into board games or a promotional Bob Ross card might get someone into Magic.

Now, those games aren't thread favorites either, but aren't those much more likely on-ramps for the hobby? On top of everything, they are easier, shorter, do not contain a required hobby element and do not have a campaign element to disappointingly trail off if life gets complicated. I have to imagine the success of simpler games like those is some part of why those games and hobbyist board games have a section in Target right now and not just Monopoly.

So, I remain dubious that KDM "introduced a lot of new people into this hobby."

Crackbone

Yeah this is a totally reasonable position and by far the strongest critique of the game. Part of the reason I'm looking forward to Townsfolk Tussle is that it captures at least some of the mechanics of KDM without being a nightmare of unnecessary and gross poo poo.
