The pawsting business is tough work.
Been a while since I painted some minis.

It's amazing how much better these things look without the goofy deathmasks and in a different paint scheme.

I did Pinkie earlier, but tonight I just finished up The Green.

They're kind of messy and I didn't particularly enjoy painting them for some reason, despite the models looking okay. I may avoid 3D printed resin minis for a little bit because they were just brittle and not *super* crisp on the details.

Not to dereail the thread but do you just play RIH with some closer friends or do your LGSs actually have support for it? I bought the PDF over Thanksgiving just because I like Vince and the other guy is pretty decent too but I haven't even finished reading the rules yet.

Brittleness and detail can both be fixed if you buy fancy resin. I've had really good luck with sirayatech fast mixed with Scott 10% of their flexibke tenacious resin

It very well could just be the quality of the printer and/or resin. That makes sense. These were just some models I picked up from a seller on Etsy so who knows what they were working with.

That’s what I do with Nolzur’s. I don’t even always reprise, usually the area getting filed down to remove the mold lines is small enough that it doesn’t matter much.

For a zenithal is it better to go with a bigger or smaller needle? Last time I tried with a 0.5 mm with the thought process that it would have a larger spread a give a more diffuse pattern. What I got was more remeniscent of an Antarctic explorer. But that could be more technique.

Needle size doesn't really effect the look of the paint when applied. Needle size effects how much paint is being sprayed at any given moment, ie larger needles throw more paint, small needles throw less. Paint atomization is primarily affected by the paint itself, and the pressure you're shooting it at. High airbrush pressure will more finely atomize the paint than a low pressure. And a thinner paint composed of finer pigments/dyes will go on smoother than a thicker paint with coarser pigments.

The quickest and simplest way to start getting smoother zenithals is to spray an ink. Inks by nature are very thin, are have very fine pigments. Something by Liquitex, FW, or Dr PH Martins would serve you very well in this case.

Yeah an easy guide to spraying a basic zenithal would be something like: have black primer and buy Liquitex Black, Grey and White Acrylic ink. Prime as usual and let it dry a little then put a few drops of grey ink and hold your airbrush a few degrees above horizontal and spray grey all around then go from above and around. Once that's done to satisfaction take a few drops of white and spray directly from above for a bit and then angle it very slightly and spray around from there. You may or may not want to go all the way white with the highlight but that's up to you.

You're basically pretending that your white ink is a giant lightbulb (or the sun) directly above your model. Your white ink is going to hit only what a light source directly above would hit and everything it misses is a shadow (black). The grey represents ambient reflected light from the surroundings and the black is avrual shadows. You may notice that after doing grey and white zenithals your model might seem a little washed out and bright. If that's the case you can take some black and shoot it from underneath to darken shadows (ie the spots that your light from above shouldn't hit anyway).

One thing to be aware of is that it's hard to go from black to white very smoothly with an airbrush and the transition between the two will be very dotty. That's what the grey is for, to smooth out the transition between black and white.

I find just black primer and white ink is good enough. Just apply less white over the primer to the lower / less exposed areas, and more coats to the most exposed surfaces.

I play the solo/ co-op expansion thingy with my daughter, and the pvp game with a friend in the neighborhood. Haven't seen it promoted or anyone playing at a LGS which makes sense, since they can't stock the game, and "Hey, buy some minis for an agnostic game we don't carry" probably doesn't dive much sales.

Sab669
Sep 24, 2009

That's mostly fair, but also it can help drive individual GW models and Reaper solos or Nolzur's stuff.

Case and point, buying that PDF made me go buy this Nighthaunt I just started last night:

But I had a big ol brain fart and painted the fire on his back backwards "dark to light" instead of "light to dark", so I need to re-prime that and fix it...

I've never tried any sort of OSL before, but with an airbrush it's pretty easy to "accidentally do it". Looking forward to fixing that and then doing the base.

Started painting up some Star Wars legion models. These snow troopers took about 2 hours from start to finish. The new camera doesn't quite capture the saturation of the colors well, particularly the white which definitely has a blueish tone. I think my main issue with the paint job is that I'm trying to replicate the way the models look in the lore, and it's just not a particularly exciting color scheme. But overall I think they're a decent representation while also being identifiable and striking on the battlefield when bunched up together.

I picked up some orange Vallejo at the store the other day, and when i got home realized its "Game Effects - Rust". Anyone know if there's a certain way to use it, or is it just regular Vallejo acrylic under a different name?

Website just has the standard Game Color copy, guessing it's the same paint: https://acrylicosvallejo.com/en/product/hobby/game-color-en/rust-72131/

If I recall correctly, this is essentially just incredibly matte orange paint. If you use it alongside regular paints it will have a different finish, which could make it stand out. If you're looking for regular orange paint, I would ask if you could exchange it (most stores will let you no problem).

Game Effects - Rust is a transparent very bright orange. It's super good for laying down on top of brown rust to give a wet rust effect.
I wouldn't use it to paint anything because the coverage is terrible (which works for weathering).

Love the face and leather on this guy. Your red is :chefskiss: and it contrasts very well with the black. Definitely gives me early 2000s 'eavy metal vibes.

Here's some more star wars minis I've been working on

The emperor was especially fun to paint. Took about 20 minutes from start to finish. Airbrushed on black ink, then used an airbrush to add volumes with dark grey, and some magenta ink to add some chromatic interest. I think I also used a dark blue on the black at first but went over it with the black, but that could be adding to the interest as well. Then I finished off the skin and cane and that was basically it. I think the brown cloth was literally just a filter of agrax earthshade.

The other minis were also fun, mostly transparent paints and only about 30 minutes each.

i like how some of the highlights (particularly on the gun) are scratchy. gives some texture to the model and adds a bit of wear and tear. it's way too much effort to do that all over the place but that is definitely a spot that stands out and was worth the extra effort.

just curious, what's your paint recipe for red? I see a brick red, a red, an orange red and a teensy bit of yellow that may actually be orange

Cockpit:

I use gemstone paints. Stormhost silver (or any really bright metal) and then the gemstone paint on top. It's much easier than jeweling. If you want it less shiny you can paint a matte varnish over it after.
