Yeah there's a bunch of x86 assembler under the hood which makes porting it troublesome, but it doesn't help that BUILD is one of the worst codebases I've ever seen in my entire life.

The engine code: https://github.com/fabiensanglard/vanilla_duke3D/blob/master/SRC/ENGINE.C
Duke3D code: https://github.com/fabiensanglard/vanilla_duke3D/blob/master/SRC/GAME.C

Yes they are each a single massive file, bursting at the seams with easily maintainable code like this:
code:
else if ((hitobject&0xc000) == 49152)  //Bullet hit a sprite
I've never really checked out the codebases for any of the ports but if they aren't functionally total rewrites then yikes

I’ve never played a Pie In The Sky engine game before. Terror in Christmas Town is the only one I’d ever heard of, and it’s because LGR covered it years ago.

That’s the only one I played, but I think it was actually an earlier, more primitive demo

Timesplitters 2 with unfucked controls: Its fine, probably on the lower end of the category.

It does remind me Im the person for whom glowing objective markers or defined interactive prompts to do things in levels is for because without those I struggle to figure out a lot of things the game wants me to do.

Also from what I can tell you are defacto the villain because without you mucking about in level 1 the enemies you're fighting later on wouldn't exist?

Read this and it confirmed the weird "did I read that" story in my head about Ken Silverman being a loving recluse and a weirdo with his engine. Thanks for this, for the longest time I thought it was some shitpost I had stumbled on while drunk.

No, the enemies in Siberia are something of a neutral party and utterly unaware of what the "thing" they have found would be capable of. You're always the hero in every mission, but with a grey morality to some extent. Your foes may not be doing anything explicitly wrong in their respective time zones, but you are always doing what's right in the grand scheme of things.

Ken Silverman made a successor to BUILD called BUILD2 which was just released in 2019 (and written around 2010): http://advsys.net/ken/buildsrc/build2.htm

It also is basically one giant C file (with another giant file for the polygon renderer) with the same code style as the original.

There's a cheese strategy which lets you just camp out those first five minutes within 20 seconds of starting the map, but even that is a crapshoot as to whether or not the fucker spots you through solid terrain once she shows up in the tunnel. Great idea for a level, but dogshit execution for the stealth section.

I mentioned it a while ago but my cousin was a dick and refused to ever borrow me CIA Operative: Solo Missions. Which turned out to hardly be the worst thing he ever did because it’s bargain bin garbage to the core.

https://youtu.be/aDg07Yq3-uU

The menus look like they came from a Newgrounds celebrity assassin game. The video seems to indicate it can be completed in about 40 minutes. I played a bit of it a while back and it’s absolutely terrible.

Edit: Years later my cousin shot himself in the leg while intoxicated. I decided that was important context.

:same:

At least perusing the PC sections of random eBay stores still has some of that magic of discovering games I'd never even heard of and making snap decisions about if I should buy them for :10bux: or not. Poor impulse buying decisions like that are why I own The War in Heaven, which... might be the worst FPS I've played, but saying that I can't really assert that's the case when I'm positive I've played some with controls so awful that the game itself was impenetrable. This is just a lovely Christian FPS where an angel lady whacks demon ladies until they die in a fire (or where a demon lady does the same to angel ladies, IDK), but it controls fine. Does seem to update at like 10 FPS despite letting you mouselook at the full framerate your computer can muster, though, so that's weird.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWrct9vEc-4&t=937s

But also I own Extreme Paintbrawl, almost specifically due to its notoriety. And I also own WWII G.I., though I've never played it. Both of these were lucky thrift store pickups.

In case you missed it: Dario Casali of All The Revenants in Final Doom and Some Of The Maps In Pretty Much Every Valve Game fame did Youtube Let's Plays throughout this year of Plutonia Experiment and, interestingly, the fan-made Plutonia 2.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzhBkRU0liU

He's not exactly an expert Youtuber or streamer or whatever, but it's fun to watch him taste his own medicine and this first video starts with a history lesson on Plutonia's creation which is pretty cool. All done in six weeks, apprently!

Time Splitters 3 is a weird sequel. Im 2/3rds in and while I appreciate the levels are massively less gimmicky than the unrelenting unpleasantness of Time Splitters 2, every time zone being used twice is kind of a bummer since there are half as many level types to see.

Theres also been a big tonal shift I don't think the game is quite carrying, although it doesn't help the only non cortez character in 2 existed to die.

Also the girl from the 90s shot me so so so many times because there is something wildly wrong with her aiming.

Timesplitters 2 sold well, but Free Radical decided it should have sold more and that it was all Eidos's fault. Having burned all their bridges with that publisher, FR would move onto EA for Future Perfect since they figured they'd know more about selling stuff. EA didn't really know how to sell a funny, whacky FPS, though, so they kept trying to coax the game to fit their own vision that they knew how to market, and apparently their vision was more or less "Wesley Snipes was really cool in Blade". Which, to be fair, isn't untrue.

Anyway, Future Perfect didn't sell as well as either side wanted, then Second Sight kinda flopped, so that was two more publishers burned on Free Radical. So, FR decided to try making the type of game that publishers wanted, rather than what they wanted.

It didn't go so well. They took ages adapting to the PS3 hardware and pissed away every time extension they were able to wrangle doing everything but the stuff they wanted the extra time for, until Ubisoft got fed up and elbowed their way into creative control, with the expected results.
