Pour in clear vinyl, pour out excess, mix glitter into more clear vinyl, pour that in, then dump excess again. So pretty much.

Toho blocked me from sharing this music video I made for my song on Youtube, it uses GODZILLA VS MEGALON footage and that's too lucrative to let anyone run wild with apparently. But it was my favorite Zilla movie (it was the only VHS we had lol) so maybe you will enjoy the origin story of Megalon.

Megalon is my favorite too, but it has to be the terrible English dub because that VHS was my only Godzilla movie growing up.

Wasn't it a thing that due to some careless distribution deal, there were a LOT of cheap bootleg vhs copies of Vs Megalon in the US, such that for a lot of Americans growing up in the home video era it is their big impression of what a "Godzilla movie" even is? Like, Vs Megalon's ubiquity led to Godzilla's kinda chintzy goofy reputation over here?

The 1976 release of Megalon was a big success, there was even an NBC special presentation of it with John Belushi in a Godzilla suit. And yeah, at some point Toho lost track of who had the US rights and for a while it was believed falsely to be public domain. Hence multiple VHS releases and the MST3K episode (which was even briefly on DVD before Toho finally started cracking down.)

It used to be a sort of received wisdom that the 70s was the worst Godzilla decade, but, every film in the seventies is kind of... awesome. It is certainly the cheapest decade I guess. But I don't find the over reliance on stock footage annoying, rather kind of charming. Plus the use of stock footage in the 70s Godzillas is nothing compared to some of the poo poo they pulled in the concurrent Gamera series.

V Megalon isn't my favorite, but I do like it and have a soft spot for it since it was the only G film I actually saw in the theater in the 1970s.

The 70s movies have a very distinctive charm. They don’t have the production value so they kinda get weird with it, the monster designs are generally stranger (albeit more humanoid), and there’s definitely a nostalgia factor as well.

I never watched any Godzilla films before '98 - I think it was even more niche in the UK than in the US - but having gone back through a lot of them since G14, I have to say the 70s films are definitely my favourite for precisely those reasons (minus nostalgia)

GvM and Hedorah in particular are just ace

As a kid it was frustrating how our VHS was just a big picture of Godzilla, but then most of the early movie was weird kid/tribe/robot stuff that was not what I was hoping for. I appreciate it now for what it is.

Not only that, it's also (as far as I know) the only G movie to include nudity in the form of porn displayed in the truck behind the driver.

Next to vs Hedorah, vs Megalon is my fave Showa G movie. Mostly because of Jet Jaguar, but it's fun all around.

Terror of Mechagodzilla also sort of has nudity when they're working on Katsura.

Correct. I'm not sure you could call the 70s *good*, but it was definitely fun.

Nahhhh we knew all about Godzilla we even had our own Kaiju (affectionately known as The Chewitt Monster…..HE LIKES TO CHEW IT CHEW IT) but yeah Godzilla was quite hard to come by in the UK in the 90s I know channel 4 showed a bunch of the films but it was stupidly late night, then when the 98 film got released there was a series of VHS tapes released of some of the old movies (I remember the design having an outline of Godzilla in neon, each film being a different colour).

^Yeah I remember those, from 4 front video. I remember what got me into Godzilla was seeing Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah as part of a Monster Night on BBC when the 98 film was released. Some of which is available on YouTube (there were segments where TV personalities bet on monster fights).

I got into Godzilla when I almost died falling from a cliff and ended up spending 2 weeks in a hospital. My dad would stop in Blockbuster after work and bring me movies every day so I could watch something during the day while bedridden. Eventually he brought one Godzilla movie and then I asked him to just keep bringing me Godzilla movies. I’ve been a fan since. Blockbuster had like 8 of them too!

Naw. I don't care about whatever distaste you have of Heisei films, the 90s gave us 6 Japanese movies, an alright Zilla cartoon, some decent video games, two MST3K episodes, and the first widely available home releases of movies that were earlier not available in the west. It was pretty cool and good(zilla).

Holy crap I thought I was misremembering for years, that magical time when we went to england when I was like 4-5 and I ran into like five kids that didn't know what Godzilla was. That crude drawing I made for them might have been the first hint of culture those poor benighted souls ever witnessed.

I would say the '80s are the worst almost by default. Only two Godzilla movies, and while I love Godzilla vs Biollante very much, Return of Godzilla has never done much for me at all (even though it holds the sentimental spot as my first ever Godzilla movie).

I listened to an interview with Alan Moore on BBC6 awhile ago, and he talked about how much he loved the latter 70s movies, where (paraphrasing) "Godzilla's looking a bit tatty around the edges, a bit lethargic, looks a bit bored - you can tell his heart isn't really in it anymore"

Really made me laugh, the image of Godzilla just sort of moping around, kicking over the occasional building

wondering when he can take another smoke break

watching the clock

That's one of the reasons why I like Godzilla vs Ebiruh (Sea Monster) so drat much. When the planes show up, Godzilla gets excited. He's jumping around, really getting into it. He's happy when he swats a plane, and you can tell he's cursing when he misses one. It's just really endearing, how much fun he's having playing with the planes.

It's also the movie where, when one of the human characters says "I know ! Let's wake up Godzilla !" it's a reasonable reaction to the situation they're in and can't possibly make things worse for our protagonists. And it might be their only hope, and that of the slaves from Infant Island.
