I think it's a lot cheaper for them to just make a few prototype doomsday weapons and watch as our own mic eviscerates us a little more every year.

Quick political gerrymandering update - a lot of the "Republicans will take Congress just due to redistricting" takes are basically clickbait at this point:

https://twitter.com/Redistrict/status/1473749734745677827

https://twitter.com/Redistrict/status/1473752773837602823

Democrats basically gerrymandered the poo poo out of NY State, IL, OR, and NJ (though not super-aggressively in NJ). They also caught extremely lucky breaks with the California redistricting commission (5/11 Republicans are now weaker) and the Arizona redistricting commission (a weak/reasonable 5D-4R map). A lot of the Republican states decided to shore up incumbents versus redistricting away Democratic seats.

Gerrymandering is still bad and should be illegal, but this time Democrats didn't unilaterally disarm and it won't be the reason why Congress likely flips to Republicans next year. It will be due to Democrats sucking and being bad, not so much the structural gerrymandering stuff.

Edit for addition: But democrats are still dumb about unilateral disarming

"It was a tragedy of her own making,” Assistant Attorney General Erin Eldridge told the jury.

No one was in any danger of being dragged off or almost dragged off by Wright, the prosecutor argued Monday. Police Sgt. Mychal Johnson had grabbed Wright’s right arm, preventing him from driving, Eldridge claimed. Potter, a well-trained 26-year police veteran, nonetheless freed up her right hand — her gun hand — and pulled her firearm even though she was standing behind Luckey at the driver’s side of Wright’s vehicle and did not have a clear view of what was happening.

For further irony they were dependent on something exclusively from stem cells, so I guess that it’s gone now, they should be happy since now so many aborted fetus tissue won’t get used (I know that’s not actually how it works, it’s just these people are morons, and that’s all they think).

Really? If anything this seems like the perfect case for manslaughter (either involuntary or voluntary). A person goes for a taser and grabs the wrong thing, so they’re clearly negligent, but don’t have the requisite intent or mental state for it to be murder.

I should say I’ve only cursory looked at this case and it’s entirely possible I’m not read up on a key element that changes what I’ve written above.

My knee-jerk reaction wasn't based on the merits of the case so much as it was based on my expectation (despite the Chauvin verdict) that most juries would side with the cops. I'd read something along that lines in the WaPo a while back. Had to look for it, here's the link if anyone cares -- https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/04/04/when-police-kill-people-they-are-rarely-prosecuted-hard-convict/

The biggest thing that bothers me about a potential invasion of Ukraine is that nerve agents might be employed. Or at the very least, extremely liberal use of WP and "it's practically phosgene"-grade lacrimating agents.

Russia's tossing Novichok around as an assassination weapon, I don't think it's a stretch to imagine them using it offensively against Ukrainian strongpoints. They don't give a gently caress about the UN or sanctions, all they need is China and the OBOR.

They're already constructing the narrative that Ukraine/NATO are planning to use chem or bio warfare against them, which could simultaneously excuse their own deployment or just pivot straight to "any NBC use was obviously NATO provocateurs".

TASS, yesterday posted:

US brings botulinum toxin to Ukraine — Donetsk Republic
According to deputy chief of the People’s Militia Directorate Eduard Basurin, a 300-kilogram container of this warfare agent, used as a spray, was brought to Mariupol and then moved to the Kharkov region

MOSCOW, December 22. /TASS/. The People’s Militia of the Donetsk People’s Republic has evidence that a batch of botulinum toxin (a highly toxic substance causing paralysis) and its antidote has been delivered to Ukraine from the United States, the deputy chief of the People’s Militia Directorate, Eduard Basurin, said on the Rossiya-1 television channel in an interview on Wednesday.

"It is common knowledge that the United States has brought different types of weapons to Ukraine," he said adding that a batch of an antidote for botulinum toxin was delivered in October. Basurin recalled that botulinum toxin was a chemical warfare agent.

"The chemical substance proper was supplied in November," he added. "A 300-kilogram container of this warfare agent, used as a spray, was brought to Mariupol. The poisonous substance was then moved to the Kharkov region."

Basurin confirmed the presence of US military instructors on the engagement line.

"Their task is to make fire emplacements. They obey only certain people. They do not have a common command on the Ukrainian side," he said.

On December 21, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said that the presence of more than 120 members of private US military companies had been identified in the villages of Avdeyevka and Priazovskoye. He stressed that containers with unknown chemical compounds had been delivered to the village of Avdeyevka and Krasny Liman for staging provocations. Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Oleg Nikolayenko has denied the presence of private military instructors from the US or toxic chemicals in the Kiev-controlled part of Donbass.
