Die Satan!
Got scammed in CEX once when I found an FF6 Advance cart for £5.99. Thought I'd gotten a bargain but when I got round to playing it turned out to be a bootleg with a dead battery.

1997 - the greatest year in British history (besides 2012).

Not just music mags.

Oink! - basically an attempt to make a non-sweary Viz for kids, and the first media job for people from Charlie Brooker to Phill Jupitus to Marc Riley - had a flexidisk on the front of it's first issue, recorded by Chris Sievey (better known as Frank Sidebottom) as Uncle Pigg:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF6Y4ClLLAE

I literally played this until the disk fell apart. Frankly it's a miracle I made it to puberty given I shared a bedroom with my brother at the time.

Also occasionally computer mags would have a flexidisk of software because they were so much cheaper to produce than cassettes, but I never got a chance to try that because my record player - a Dansette I inherited from my gran that would probably be worth a fortune now - had no output but the speaker.

Just jumping into the Xmas Noncing Number One discourse to point out that The Kunts record is, of course, based on the record that the KLF based their Dr Who record on, which is “Rock and Roll Part 2” by Leading 70s Pop Nonce Gary Glitter. A fact they recognise in one the videos to accompany the song looking like a classic noncey 70s Top of the Pops.

Am a Gen Xers on the end of the range, and my first vinyl was from a cover of Oink! magazine which came out in the mid eighties.
It was made and sung by Mark Riley who was in the Fall for a bit, Mark and Lard on Radio 1, and now is on Radio 6.
Had to play it in my grandmothers house as they were the only ones who had a player.

Riley played bass on it (he was part of Frank Sidebottom's band, and a writer on the magazine). *Allegedly* the pitch-shifted backing vocal is Marti Pellow from Wet Wet Wet, which I always assumed was playground bullshit, but the Wets did use Sidebottom as a support act quite a lot.

You need to provide ID and sign a declaration that it's not stolen, which works as well as you might expect.

Its a demand thing too, you'll see high prices for anything that didn't sell enough units to become ubiquitous and never saw a re-release.

For example the late GBC game Shantae used to sell for well over £100, but the price tanked after it was made available on the 3DS and Wii U virtual console services.

While it was still super expensive Limited Run Games produced a well, limited run of reproduction carts that now sell for £90 wheras an original Shantae cart will set you back £15 at most. I imagine the price may creep up again as the wiiU and 3DS version fades into obscurity though.

One things for certain my Skies of Arcadia disc is going on ebay the moment a HD version comes out. It'll happen any day now sega won't keep me waiting.

Oh, other people answered. Flexidiscs. Pretty sure breakfast cereals did them occasionally too.

e: Wow my memory was almost accurate, CEX opened in 1992, but he did work there rather than founding it, and he got his job being snarky about 16 bit games as a result of working there:

I liked CEX as I got my Xbox from them after trading in a bunch of old games I had which in my opinion were bought for ridiculous trade in value.

They gave me £20 for Super Mario Sunshine, which is far far more than it's worth. And other games went for similar amounts.
