I got 105% on DKC3 when I was a kid, so no savestates or anything. It was pretty rough, but a lot of fun. It'd be easier on the Switch version with rewind/save states. So I picked up the Actraiser remake since it's on sale, only 15% but it did only just come out a few months ago and who knows when it'll go on sale again. So far I'm really enjoying it. Random thoughts: The sim city part looks really good, the action stages look worse. The music is fantastic. The earthquake move sucks rear end now, probably due to the siege stuff, since you use your miracles to attack monsters in sieges, and I guess that they didn't want it to be so overpowered. So unfortunately there's no fast and easy way to wipe out your low level houses in the sim part when you get to max civilization level, earthquake has a smaller area of effect and costs much more SP to use than lightning, so you're going to have to use lightning a lot to max out your population. This sucks too because you don't automatically regain SP as time passes, you're dependent on the fields providing you with SP potions, and that's RNG, or defeating monsters, which once you seal all the lairs, isn't an option. This means you'll be wasting much more time than usual just to use a miracle to wipe out low level huts, and then spend time waiting for them to rebuild. Not that population seems to matter much anyway. Instead of level being dependent on population like in the original, you do quests to earn experience (Faith) to level up. There is a quest to have a certain population in the area but it might be possible to reach it without destroying low level huts. I had 422 population when I did everything I could in Fillmore, and the population quest only required 300. I don't really like having to go into the monster's lair and destroy some colored orbs to seal it. It feels tacked on and unnecessary, especially since a big part of the original is you were mostly just guiding your people, and they took care of the monster lairs themselves. Having to go in and take care of it for them takes away from the game a bit, plus the orb levels just suck. They're at least short and you can do them in a minute or two, but that just makes them feel more tacked on and pointless. I guess maybe they were worried that kids these days would lose interest if they had to just do sim city stuff for a while and didn't get to slash monsters in a sidescrolling part? Not trying to sound like an old man or anything, but that's literally the only reason I can think of to add such unnecessary poo poo. The siege stuff is alright. It's pretty barebones and simplistic, but it isn't terrible, and the later ones were actually a little challenging, so they'll probably get more interesting and intense in later areas. I do wish there wasn't a limit on how many forts you can build though, especially since there's some potentially interesting tradeoffs with building location. Basically you can build forts only in preset places, some of them are "free" in the sense they only cost resources, but some fort locations will force you to give up a field or a workshop to build one there, which reduces your max population and the amount of resources you gain. But since there's a limit on the number of forts you can have and (at least in Fillmore) there's enough "free" spaces that you can build forts without having to give up anything, there doesn't seem to be much strategy as to where to build them. Again, only the first area, plenty of chances for that to change later, of course. The extra story stuff they added with the angel talking poo poo about humans, and the prophesied heroes being resurrected is fine I guess. I don't hate it, it's whatever. Anyway overall I really do like it. I do wish the original was on the SNES Online service, I still feel it's the best version of the game, but this version is pretty good too and I'm enjoying my time with it.

Okay finished up Bloodpool in the Actraiser remake and the siege portions definitely do get much harder, got a couple of game overs doing them. They introduce flying enemies that go straight for your crops, and losing all your crops is a defeat. They also introduce enemies that resist magic (the hero in Bloodpool is a mage) so they'll gently caress up your Magetowers, which is also a defeat, and you only have one hero that can deal with them (and even he can't deal with an entire horde). I also found out that you don't really have to sacrifice population/resources for fort building, it looks like if you build a fort somewhere that destroys houses or fields/shops, then they'll just rebuild those places elsewhere during the next cycle. Again, at least so far, there could be areas later where rebuilding a field or shop isn't possible.

I like roguelikes, Hades imo is not a great roguelike. The presentation is good but the actual gameplay didn't feel great to me? I wasn't really feeling the story either but I'm in the minority in this one so what do I know.

I don't know how the combat stinks. You have six different weapons, each with their own sometimes wildly different variants. It's not super complex but it feels like a solid beat 'em up with the weapons having their combo of light attacks, a slower heavier special, and a third spell which you can consider a exhaustible "special" attack. Plus a dodge, which I love, because dodging things is tons of fun, and this dodge here is great. It's clear though that people have made their opinions, and it's either unfortunate or just contrarian. Either way I hope there's things out there you've managed to enjoy as much as myself and others have enjoyed Hades, because those experiences are few and far between.

Checked the op and been keeping up with the past few pages but what's the status of joycon drift issues? There's a boatload of non Nintendo joycons on Amazon. Anything with better durability these days? Or is Nintendo stuff still the go-to? I had bought some third party controllers without gyro / rumble a while ago but left them at home since they don't fit in my travel case. Edit:hades rules

This question wasn’t posed to me but I’m going to answer it because I don’t care for rogue likes either. To me roguelikes feel like someone made an entire genre out of the feeling of forgetting to save your game and dying, forcing you to start over and losing two hours of progress. It’s just not a good feeling to me, although Hades isn’t prone to that problem because you actually do make progress even when your character dies.

I pressed the guy 5 different ways and yes, he meant it literally and would not budge on the opinion. I am baffled to this day.
