I've been enjoying Komi can't communicate a fair bit but I'm not really a fan of the text boxes spelling things out rather than letting the animation convey the characters' emotions. The image also gets painfully cluttered when you have Japanese text boxes and then English translations in floating text above the boxes. Is there any reason why they don't just overwrite the Japanese text box with the English text for the localizations?

Some of the better fansub groups will overwrite the Japanese text directly but you're not likely to see that in an official release just because it's so much more complicated.

The source video has to be used for all regions, so that would mean having to typeset it with all of the multiple languages Netflix uses, plus there may be restrictions against altering said source footage directly in the license and you can't do it on a soft sub because the technology most streaming services use doesn't support such typesetting. E: Like if it was Crunchyroll, they would have been able to do something about it because they do some basic typesetting and at least Funimation puts signs on the top of the screen separate from dialogue Waffleman_ fucked around with this message at 20:57 on Dec 24, 2021 |
